Janet's Velvet Rope: masterpiece or not?

Critics called it her best work and although sales were slow and people started hating on janet, I think it's aged well as an album and I still love it, although I don't know if it's her best ever. Sometimes I love it and other times I'm just not in the mood for it.

What is your honest take on this album? Please stick to the music, no jokes about coffee enemas, thanks smile

Its a classic. The tour is still one of the best tours I've seen to date. That show was incredible.

It's okay. Nothing more, nothing less.

Examples?
There are 16 actual songs on there. Which ones do you think are "crap"?

It's a classic. Any CD that has songs like "Together Again" and "I Get So Lonely" on them is a classic in my eyes.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Had to get the CD out to view them over there because they sure as hell aren't in my iTunes library.

eek
This album has some of Janet's best work. It's probably the last time we've actually seen her do something artistic. What man cannot get a hard-on after listening to "Rope Burn"?

I remember that one. lol God, what an awful song. I always hated those silly songs she started doing with "Whoops Now". Yuck! That shit ultimately led to "Just A Little While", one of the most disgusting songs ever. I only heard it two or three times, but I still can't shake the memory. smile

Standards are pretty low in orgland. Like I said before, "Velvet Rope" is okay. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah, her older summery danceable songs like Escapade and When I Think Of You are are classics. I even like Because of Love! You can barely even hear her weak voice on Go Deep and like I said, it's really dated.

I love "Escapade". "Because of Love" is okay, but I have a pair of balls which means I unfortunately can't relate to it.

Well I still think that "Rhythm Nation" is Janet's best album to date and I doubt she'll ever top it, but I think "The Velvet Rope" is a damn good album in it's own right. Janet really stepped out of her comfort zone. She took on subject matters that she'd never discussed in great detail before like spousal abuse, sexuality, AIDS, etc. Songs like "You", "Got 'Til It's Gone", "Together Again", "Rope Burn", "Velvet Rope", "What About", "Free Xone" are all top notch. It was so different from anything she had done before. I just love that album and yes the tour was absolutely incredible! I think it's her best tour to date.
