The same can be said for the other music award shows as well. The Grammys, The BET awards, The SoulTrain and the AMA's ratings have all been in the toilet for the past few years. Why, I think the answer lies, in the type of music that is being produced as well as the artist that are making it. That's the reason why, these shows are so low in the ratings. I remember one could not wait to see who was going to perform, now it is more like..."When is the shit going to end. Dick Clark realized this a few years ago, when he moved the AMA's from Jan to Nov., in the hopes of not only having to compete with the other shows, but he figured that it was thankgiving and more people would be home. It did not do any good.

Yep. Every year MTV have this list of performers confirmed for the show and they hold back some names to keep secret as if there's going to be some amazing special thing that's going to happen. The name they held back this year until the last day or two was Kanye West. I mean WHAT? Kanye West has performed at pretty much every music awards show in the Western world in the last year, so what the hell is so special about him? They've got nothing of interest.

Exactly! My preschool bathroom was bigger. Each year the venue shrinks and shrinks, what are we running out of celebs or something?

Is it possible that "sponsors" know their is NO value in music anymore. Why should a big corporation pay for the bill, when these kids (I would say 98% of them) get their music for FREE!

Tonight it felt like the Teens Choice Awards...

I taped the show cause I wanted to see what was going to happen. When I came home, I caught the last of the show and what you said VANITYSprisonBYTCH was exactly what sprung to my head. That little bit showed me how interested, or lack thereof, MTV is with music. I'm not trying to hate on MTV or today's music but music is in the lowest place I've ever seen it and this award show is big reflection of how bad the quality of music is. I mean, the awards show was done in a Movie Studio lot. WTF? MTV really needs to call it a day and just repackage itself into a Reality TV network for teens cause that's what it has become. What a damn shame. disbelief

I remember one year when the Soul Train Award Show was held in the same soundstage studio that the Soul Train Dance Show was recorded. None of the big name stars attended...the next year it was announced that there would be no more Soul Train Award Show.

Perhaps the same thing will happen to the VMAs.

I was just thinking that after I wrote my post. lol I'm just amazed at how we are all on the same page when it comes to the VMA's. It used to be so much fun to watch because it was not just about music but the unexpected would happen and it was genuine. I just can't believe that the station I used to love watching as a kid has now become fucking Teen Central. That's some fucked up shit right there.

I'm with you on that. I hate how superficial the programming that is on there is. Even "The Real World" is as phony as it gets, not like it was a symbol for how real life is or was. I'm glad I was a teenager in the 90's when MTV was still about the music.

Todays awards show is their 25th Anniversary show, and yet, there has been no mention or very little of that in the press. WHY? they have nothing to show for it, they cant even capitalize on this, because they have no status anymore. Todays show will opened by Britney Spears who will NOT PERFORM, she will just make an appearance that is said to be "fun and interesting", Christina Aguilera will perform a new version of "genie in a bottle" that is to be on her Best of set, it is also the only nod to the "anniversary" of the show? Really, performing a song barely 9 years old is your "anniversary" celebration.

Those of you thinking of tuning in dont be surprised to not see much, alot of acts are not there, despite being nominating, due to performing at the Fashion Rocks show and not being able to work it in the schedule (remember when these acts CARED to make the show?) Fasion Rocks airs Tuesday night, in edited form on CBS, and madonna fans get ready to get your HATE on as Rihanna Covers "Vogue", but most of the performances are pretty good, with the exception of maybe Chris Brown's "Lysynching" number.

they really must cant get no big stars to come to the vma's no more, imagine the ratings boost they coulda had if they would have gotten the icons of the 80's who helped shape mtv (when they actually played videos) to come and celebrate 25 years. mtv might as well start giving awards to the top reality show stars of the year since thats basically what they have become

The whole show sucked and didn't the venue look soooo small for an anniversary special? I think the VMAs will be ending its reign in the coming years. For me, I think Pink had the best performance of the night! But I was just blown away by Christina Aguilera who criticized her peers just a few years ago for their lipsynching. Yet she was on last night lipping (badly at that) and wearing Britney Spears opening costume for her Toxic tour....cape and all!! eek She had Lady Gaga hair and swag and that new song sounds like a mix of Goldfrapp, Pink, and Britney leftovers when she prides herself on being "original".

MTV despite having its main building in NYC could not get clearance for a venue, due to Fashion Week and the Fashion Rocks Concert, they wanted Radio City but were turned down. How great is that, MTV cant get a house even NYC doesnt want to deal with their bullshit anymore. Maybe MTV is going broke since its paying those "HILLS" chicks 15-30,000 dollars an episode, why?? to do a fake ass reality show that has a script, just like all their other fake ass reality shows

I watch the VMAs every year because I have to laugh at something. Honestly, this show was better than last years to me. I can't even remember who hosted that piece of shit it was soo terrible and it wasn't just Britney either. MTV stopped being about music when the music industry stopped signing real musicians and started signing puppets. Not 100% MTV's fault because all award shows are pretty crappy nowadays.

Maybe one reason MTV couldn't get clearance for Radio City Music Hall is because many of the designers at fashion week were either premiering anticipated lines (Justin Timberlake's 'William Rast Collection') and also celebrating their big anniversaries, so of course NYC, one of the fashion capitals of the world, is going to give fashion more love than the VMAs. Either an overpriced designer's fashion show or an overhyped award show...hmmm?

I thought Russell Brand was funny. Anyone who calls Bush a retarded cowboy and makes a comment about how he wouldn't be allowed to hold a pair of scissors in the UK is good in my book. He made some pretty funny jokes, but for the same reason that everyone hated on Sarah Silverman last year, one joke that people deem mean or offensive causes someone not to be funny...uh, aren't most comediennes mean, lewd, and/or offensive at some point in their careers? I thought the promise ring thing was funny as hell, but apparently people get made about that type of thing. All he was saying is, "Seriously, you aren't going to have sex until marriage? That's great, but what if you get into a serious relationship? You still aren't going to have sex? So after you marry this girl and you find out the sex is awful to the point of being unbearable, what are you going to do?" Sex is pretty important in a marriage from what I've been told by many married people. I guess getting divorced is better than having sex before marriage nowadays. More power to them, but they can keep the promise rings. I like to test drive the car before I start making payments. I'm just sayin'.

Rhianna can't sing live, but that big ass staircase/pedestal/podium thing was interesting and her boots in both performances were kick ass.

Don't get the Jonas Brothers at all. When I was watching them all I could think about was Hanson: The Next Generation. MMBop anyone?

Lil Wayne is like 4 feet tall and was running his ass off, but he didn't skip a beat, which is a good quality to possess IMO. I didn't get why Leona Lewis was there with him, but she sounded very nice. T-Pain is the Lil Jon of this year pretty much.

Pink's performance was awesome. She usually always delivers the goods and I saw her taped up nipple...twice. lol

Kanye can sing? Didn't really understand half of what he was saying, but I'm glad he didn't bitch this year...wait, I'll have to wait a couple days before I can clear that statement.

T.I.'s skit was kinda funny, but that song is mad catchy and I liked that new song with Rhianna.

Parramore...all I can say is, Damn, that girl was running her ass off and didn't miss a single note. One of the girls that I work with said that she was the only one offered a record deal and she told the label that if they didn't take the whole band, then they weren't getting her, so kudos to her for that.

Kid Rock sucked...hated that song when I first heard it on the radio, and hate if even more now. Nobody in that room got up or showed any enthusiasm for his entire performance. Totally didn't get the Lil Wayne bit at all...maybe he owed Kid some money and this was how he repayed the debt because that performance was garbage.

I liked Christina's remake of 'Genie In A Bottle'. If she had come out sounding exactly like the original, I would have been disappointed. She has said many times that her first record was more the input of her record label and producers than her own. Plus, the original is soo bubblegum pop sounding that it would be weird hearing her sing it now, because that's not her style anymore. It would have been nice if she hadn't lip-synced it...bad Christina! no no no! I didn't get until the end of the performance that she and all the dancers were a superheroes. Didn't much like the song, but the performance was cute.

Tokio Hotel was interesting, especially since my spaced out ass totally couldn't believe that the one with the black hair was a dude. lol He's pretty.

I agree with many about Lupe Fiasco and Katy Perry. Lupe is really good and Katy was hyped from the beginning. LL Cool J has his 13th album about to drop and all of them were put on right at the commercial break.

Everyone from the Hills can suck ass. It's a scripted 'reality' show...fake reality, not that's an oxymoron for ya. Seriously, all the starving people in the world and MTV is paying these losers thousands of dollars to take up space and air. disbelief

Paris Hilton is the stupidest person on the earth. It was worth watching the show just to watch that tranny looking heifer stare in the wrong direction and then turn and say, "Oh, I was looking the wrong way." Uhh, you think so, genius?

Britney looked very nice last night, but she was only there with her manager, which I found odd and a little sad. She looked a little lonely at points and out of her comfort zone. Not a fan, but am happy to see she's looking healthy and on the right track. I never knew that she had never won a VMA, especially since she was MTV's golden girl from '99 to about '02. She had a Susan Lucci moment, so yay for her.

I was a little confused by Perez Hilton during the post show when he said, that nobody thought Russell Brand was funny because he made fun of the Jonas Brothers and then he starts saying that the gossip in the UK is that Russell Brand is a sex addict....uhhh, and? Then, he makes himself sound even more 'intelligent' when he says how he's on the VMA voting committee and that he voted for Britney because he felt that, "She needed it". What the fuck does that mean? Does that mean that the three awards that she won were because the voting committee felt sorry for her or something? So, she got three awards: one called 'pity', one called 'sympathy', and one called 'hope', from the statement he made.

I bought Russell Brand's book and the very first chapter is him talking about being in rehab as a sex addict and having to share a room with a paedophile, so it's hardly a secret. GREAT autobiography by he way - he really has a gift for language.

I agree on most points, very well said. The deal here in NYC since i have been working down at the fashion show is the legalities of the shows, and the bigger issue was that Radio City turned down MTV because NYC would not grant permits for this event, that being the MTV awards, apparently something must have gone wrong last time. Plus i think there are finanacial issues with MTV at this point.

Now on your points, Perez Hilton and Paris just need to go away, i fucking hate Perez Hilton and everything he stands for, and the idea that he is some form of media? this fat ugly asshole shouldnt even be allowed to watch tv let alone go to events.

The fact that the likes of Ll Cool J and Lupe Fiasco got cut while, the minstrel show antics of Tpain were played over and over, shows what image of balck people and hip hop these media outlets want to be seen.

Jonas Brothers and Paramore called ROCK is a real problem, and everyone who likes Rock should be doing something about this shit right now.

the rest didnt really do anything for me, didnt despise it, but nothing i said wow, that was damn good, though i appreciate the fact that Kanye for once wasnt a total DICK, maybe finally he is growing up. Pink i liked but im growing tired off her for some reason, the records are all startint to blend into one theme and sound.

Obviously i agree on the HILLS points, any show that employs people named Brody or Jenner and Spencer needs to be taken off the air and the film burnt, as for the girls who get $$ per episode, i SUGGEST saving it! cause you aint getting a gig that stupid to pay you like that again.

As for Britney thats exactly how she needs to be , sitting alone, away from Bad influences like her past manager and her mother.

I have a few thoughts about this show.... I actually stayed up to see the show live (remember I live in Iceland which is 4 hours ahead of the East Coast) while recording it on my DVR, then watched it again (without the commercials) tonight with some friends....

First off I thought Russell Brand was funny in his own way... There have been funnier hosts of course (like Chris Rock for instance) but I thought his own brand (no pun intended) of humour was a breath of fresh air compared to most of the things on that show....

When I watched the show with my friends, everyone asked the same question: who the fuck is T.I.? This dude must really just be famous in the U.S. because I've never heard a single song from him on the radio, yet he's supposed to be a big thing over there? And I agree with lastdecember about the elephant and those annoying reality stars but I would add T-Pain and Lil' Wayne to the list...

That "Lollipop" song has to be biggest pile of turd I've heard this year! Luckily they didn't perform it but the songs they did instead weren't exactly great either.

I liked the Paramore performance... it didn't have a "wow" factor but at least it featured people playing real instruments and no lip-synching....
While Kid Rock didn't lipsynch either, I just prefer not to listen to him do bad covers of classic songs like he has been doing for the past 10 years.

Britney's awards were obviously a way for MTV to make peace with her after the embarrassment from last year. She looked great though.

Christina seems to be borrowing HEAVILY from Kylie Minogue and Goldfrapp with her new stuff. It's a shame she had to lipsynch.... she REALLY is better than that.

The Jonas Brothers.... the less said about them the better. After the rock-part went into swing (and that acoustic "playback" stopped) I noticed how the singing got considerably worse... Yay.... another group of out-of-tune pretty boys ... the only twist is that they seem to be part of some American religious bullshit that says sex before marriage makes you a "slut" ..... at least that's what Jordin Sparks seems to think. It looks like she's thick in more ways than one.

The only positive thing I will say about Tokio Hotel is that they didn't thank God and their managers like everybody does when receiving an award, instead they thanked their oh-so loyal fans, who earned them their award.

I wished that the Ting Tings and Katy Perry would have gotten more airtime instead of certain shit-hoppers who got too much airtime and I would have liked less of the "black Madonna" who obviously thinks sampling the "noma noma song" is a good idea for a song. lol

7.3 ratings would suggest they are still relevant. shrug go figure, i thought the show was crap.
