"Holding hands at midnight/'neath a starry sky/it's nice work if you can get it/and you can get it if you try . . ." George Gershwin, "Nice Work If You Can Get It" (I prefer Sarah Vaughan's version)

"You owe nothing to the past but wasted time/to serve a sentence that was only in your mind . . ." Beck, "End Of the Day"

"My back to the wall, a victim of laughing chance/this is for me, the essence of true romance . . ." Donald Fagen, "Deacon Blues"

"Catch up baby/catch up with my dreams/maybe then I can see you all the time . . ." Stevie Wonder, "Tuesday Heartbreak"

"Don't go and talk about my father/'cause God is my friend . . ." Marvin Gaye, "God Is Love"

"1989 the number/another summer/sound of the funky drummer . . . " Chuck D., "Fight The Power"

"She keeps me walking in my shoes . . ." Al Green "Never Found Me A Girl"

"My umi say shine your light on the world/shine your light for the world to see . . ." Mos Def, "Umi Says"

"I can't write left-handed . . ." Bill Withers, "I Can't Write Left Handed"

"Don't you know straight hair ain't got no curl?" Prince, "Pop Life"

"He's poor in all but truth/But what a fool he is/To wish for wine in her empty kiss" Me'Shell Ndegeocello, "Sincerity"

so many others to name . . .
