The Painful Voice Of Alicia Keys

Saw her live very recently...not a fan of her music but I ain't saying no to a freebie smile

What really struck me is how awful her voice is these days. She's completely unable to sustain a voice or to sing softly. Not one note she does ends with any ease of vibrato. It sounded so strained that it was painful to listen to. Far too many times she'd have the BV singers (who were great) doing the choruses and the dynamic bits. Basically, she shouts her way through a song. I think it's safe to say that her voice is ruined. I question the validity of her touring at the moment.

That's the reason I didn't buy her third album. She didn't sound good like she usually does so I decided it wasn't worth it.

I think her thrid album is better than the second one. I like her voice even now.
Last November she played for Boris Becker for his German TV-Show. She played live and unplugged in a piano-shop and i sounded fantastic.

the songs sounded promising but her voice sounded weak like any average r&b singer.

Her second album is a masterpiece though, musically, lyrically and especially vocally. Although her first album is nice, it's nothing special.

She might have just worn her voice out.

Even the most trained voices can get weak and strained over time. This has happened to the best, MJ, Prince, even Donna Summer suffers from this from time to time, and she was trained to be an opera singer. It happens.

That made me sick. *cringe* disbelief

Based on the 1 performance.....shouldn't a professional be better than average?

Some of AK47's records have notes that are completely impossible without technology. I'm not looking to trash all of her work or anything. It's just very noticeable if you've ever spent time recording vocals.

Presuming her voice IS worn out (which I am taking from Mong's post) . . .

Do you think that her early success dissuaded her or her people from providing the training that could have helped her?

Maybe. I think it's more of a function of her believing her own hype. The woman is highly overrated in my opinion.

I think she's okay. I've never bought any of her records, but they're listenable enough. Couldn't argue your point, though.

I remember when she first came on the scene, years ago. She was still taking singing lessons while she was doing shows. She has never been that great of a singer and has never claimed to be. But, she has come along way. I personally think that there are some who like to go "Alicia bashing", every so often.

Bottom line she is a professional and she sounds like sh&t live more than 50% of the time... which then tells me she is a studio creation...

But then the worst part is no one is a studio creation and its out of key too.

Tired of her getting a pass...

Either bring it live or stay home.

Did I mention she was classically trained.. wink wink... and Joss stone is from the ghetto.... wink wink

She is not a studio creation. If you don't know what a studio creation sounds like, then you need to watch the latest episode of Puffy's "Making the Band". They are studio created. While she is not the greatest singer in the world, by any means, she is a decent singer. Singing live is not easy, especially when you are on tour, night after night. It wears out your voice, no matter who you are. I have seen her live both at the begining and at the end of her tour, and yes there is a difference. At the very begining, she sounded fresh and toward the end, her voice did sound not as strong. But, the same can be said for MJ, Prince, Jill Scott. All of whom I have seen live on different occassions.

There's a part of No One where she sings "some people search the world..." in a nice, normal voice and it gives me tingles every time. In the good way. cool
