I'm seeing Backstreet Boys in a week! Yeah, I'm fucking psyched!
I'll give you a moment to quit laughing. waits patiently for the snickering to stop Ah, to hell with it. I don't have all day. They're playing GM Place here in Vancouver next Thursday. Yeah, that place that hosts NHL games. Not exactly a small venue. Seems only the U.S. thinks they broke up. It's an interesting situation, actually. This frame of their career is sort of a mirror of what was happening in the early years, where everyone but the U.S. was loving them. Huh. Whatever you think about them (and I'm guessing for most of you, it's not much ) you have to admit -15 years and still going strong is god damned impressive for a boyband, considering that sort of act typically only has a shelf-life of 2 or 3 years. Kevin's departure notwithstanding, the group is still intact. This isn't, as certain press has tried to claim, a comeback or reunion tour. So why am I so psyched about going to see Backstreet Boys again? (Yes, I've done this before! I rock just that hard. ) Because you never truly stop loving what you did when you were 12. Prove me wrong. They were instrumental in my introduction to Prince and by extension, my introduction to music as something to take seriously and appreciate as an artform. No, it's not an obvious leap, and yes, it is kind of a long story. But there you have it. A boyband led me to my deep, deep love of ATWIAD. They were what led to my adoration of the joys of guy-on-guy lovin', and my intro at the tender age of 12 to slash fan fiction. Yeah, that one is more obvious, innit? The younger two can be thanked for that one. Most importantly, the person that I would consider my closest friend and I first bonded when we were youngins over our love of the Boys. Outside of family, she means more to me than just about anybody I can think of. So, let's hear it for the Boys! With or without Mr. Richardson, I've got too many fond and fun memories wrapped up in them to get off the bus now. lol In Japan, some boy bands have been going on for more than 20 years!
But Japan isn't the US . I only clicked on this thread to see what kind of replies you'd get (Sorry XD). Well I'm no fan, but if they make you feel ( ) then good for you !

Japan's weird like that though. Generally speaking, even on a global market boybands just aren't acts that normally have staying power. Why and how Backstreet Boys have been able to stick it out for so long is a bit of a mystery probably even to those involved, though I suspect it has something to do with the fact that in spite of some spiffy choreography and catchy pop tunes, they were never really all that good at actually being a boyband. wasn't no BSB poppin back in `93 Um, yeah there was. The date Brian joined the group was April 20th, 1993. He finished off the last few months of his senior year of high school as they launched into their first tour and first round of label fishing. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Just kidding...have fun! You seen the size of GM Place? They wouldn't be booking arenas and stadiums for this tour if they couldn't sell a decent amount of tickets for the show. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I still can't look at publicity shots without thinking something is missing. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

no, it was fine. and the setlist was great. hits hits hits. i only got bored a couple of times. or maybe i was just a little too drunk in those moments and had to sit down to recover.

i forget which. Sounds like a hoot. Last time I saw them was 2005 in Kelowna. Up in the 2nd or 3rd row was crowd of 7 or 8 obviously straight guys who were there with nary a sister or girlfriend in sight. You should've seen the looks on the Boys faces when they noticed this crowd. Brian actually motioned the others to his section of the stage just to get a good look. It was brilliant. they still get hype in Canada, I don't even know their new songs and don't care. I was only a casual listener of them, never became a fan cause I already was into mj and prince for years and what they did was nothing new or special to me.

Either you've been lurking in BSB boards to get this pic, or you saved the one I posted. Either way, I'm touched. FYI, if anyone wants to know the context for that photo: About 7 or 8 years ago Jive Records got the grand idea to do this big, weird cross-promotion with their key moneymakers, (the Boys) Burger King, and Marvel Comics. The result was a miniseries -given the green light by Stan Lee himself, the senile old bugger -featuring the Boys as superheroes. Action figures were available at Burger King with a purchase of a meal. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I saw them in 2005, I think, whenever Kevin was still in the band.
They sucked big time. Brian was high, Nick was fat, the others were just lifeless. They ruined all their hits with acoustic versions and didn't get into it at all. I forgot about them almost as soon as I left. Almost 6 years of support for nothing. They couldn't tour Australia in their peak of course, they had to wait til they couldn't sell anywhere anymore. Hope they're better for you this time around.

Nick's always been fat. Not sure what you're talking about with the Australia thing. The Black and Blue tour was a world one. I thought that included Oz?
