There, that's more like it. smile

Well if that's gonna be your reason for hating an artist, let's see....

Rick James
Jim Morrison
James Brown
Janis Joplin
Prince
Brian Wilson
Stevie Nicks
Michael Jackson
and on
and on
and on

all fuckups in their own special ways. If you're going to dislike an artist because of their personal life, I'd suggest you just plain stop listening to music.

nod Good argument

Settle down kids. Presley's been dead 31 years. You don't like him? Don't go to Graceland. It's easy.

You've never had fried bananas or plantains with ice cream? I thought that was almost a standard on restaurant menus these days. Fried bananas are nummy!

Stymie, you raised MADHOUSE hell, dahling worship thats all I gotta say.

And on that note, FUCK Elvis again cool

Elvis was a country singer who happened to sing blues songs too. Should we make a big deal about the black musicians who play classical, country, or other music invented by white folks?

Rock n roll was a combination of the talents of black and white people together because a lot of the stuff that came out early on was just blues called by a different name.

Thats true. If rock'n'roll was soley a black music from it would of been invented in Africa. So did Big Mama Thornton rip off white people by singing 'Hound dog'? In general are black people ripping off white people if they sing a song written by white people? The whole argument is ridiculous really. Elvis has the King title because he was the most POPULAR artist of his day, no one says it's because he's the best cause it's all subjective. Just like Michael Jackson is the king of pop, pop is typically a white music form yet Michaels the king, not because he's necessarily the best but because hes undeniably the most popular 'pop' artist of all time.

Damn few of these well-loved performers led healthy, functional lives. Disliking just one or two for their habits while giving a pass to the rest is silly.

Even I know, as a non-American, that the history of racism in America is something that you can't go around.....it's there! Here on the org, everywhere where racism is mentioned I see you coming up being all defensive & angry and stuff about it and I am sure you have reason to be. Saying that Elvis was a racist mofo is just too easy, tA and others have already proved with their posts that there is no real evidence aside from some urban myths. Elvis just was singer, inspired by black musicians and made a successful career out of it. Did he deprive the black musicians from their paychecks??? No, did the American society in that time do that? Probably yes..... All this BS about that Elvis stole from the black community has to stop, it was a matter of circumstances. As stated earlier, Chuck Berry or James Brown never had a problem with it.
Yes, we all know that racism in the US was/is real, does this mean that every white artist inspired by african-american culture is a racist thief/crook?? Puhlease!!!
This guy, Robin Thicke nowadays.....he's white as a motherfucker.....his music could be condidered as black modern RnB.....whose paycheck is he stealing??

BTW, what's this shit about Stymie raising hell here?? Can't we have just a normal discussion??

Carry on

Thank you lol

Honestly, I couldn't give 2 shits who stole from who,,,this argument is the most redundant one in theOrg(next to the Prince Vs MJ threads lol). Did black artists rip off others? Hell yes, I wasn't born yesterday,,,,but history will show you who was the biggest thieves in the entertainment business yesterday and today,,,,google it, look for it in books, ignore it,,,thats your say. My only argument is, his music sucks big sweaty-humid-in-summertime balls,,,,in short.

But you guys will go through fire and beyond to make people give a shit about this dude's music when alot of people here just,,,don't shrug And its not me who gotton defensive and angry about it,,,,look who made a whole thread over a simple reply from that "hatred thread" lol

It is what it is, though.

This I agree with you, I don't own a single record by him and I can't sit through one single movie with him in it! So, this is a valid reason to dislike him, without having to get upset about his alleged stealing from black musicians, his alleged racism, etc..... Your 'FUCK Elvis' comment seems a bit obsolete, the guy has been dead for over 30 years.....ya know? wink

That's the truth. Dude was way overrated, but I love reading stories about how out-of-control he was.

In terms of wackiness, hardcore Elvis fans are right up there with diehard Michael Jackson fans. biggrin biggrin

The one good thing you can say about Elvis is he had some powerful genes. Lisa Marie looks just like her dad, right down to the raccoon eyes.

That's very easy to say after 60+ years of rock 'n roll. Back in the day there was hardly anyone else who was doing the same thing, please tell me how he was overrated??

The out of control-stories weren't until well into the 70's, he started his career in the late 50's.....

This personal to me. I must explain:

In the mid-50's, Elvis was living in Houston. He met my Mom at the beach one day and became enamored with her. He asked her out, but she turned him down. She was dating the man she would eventually marry (my Dad) and didn't see a future with Elvis. He was persistent, even sending her a Christmas card (which she threw away) but in the end, my Dad beat out Elvis Presley.

Now, this COULD be an homage to my Dad and his ultimate coolness (not to brag, but he was universally known as the coolest man in America), but think this through.

What if my Mom HAD dated, and then married, Elvis? I wouldn't be RodeoSchro.

I would be Lisa Marie Presley.

Which means I would have been married to Michael Jackson. Which means I would have SLEPT with Michael Jackson.

Now you understand why sometimes, I wake up screaming.

but that's just the point: there were tons of people doing what he was doing - but they were black and therefore marginalized. how do you not get that? he's overrated because he can't help but be. if you and i are at a track meet, and you shoot me in the foot, go on to win the race, and get all the accolades thrust upon you, couldn't your "triumph" be seen by some as overrated at the very least? hollow and pyrrhic? undeserved?

whofarted ... what .. in the heck kinda sandwich is that?

It was something either he or his momma made up. They said the sandwich was an appetizer and it's likely he might've gotten the taste from it from his momma cooking it for him and when he moved to his home in Graceland, he told the maids he hired to cook it the way his mama did it, lol.

i actually googled this. apparently he first tasted it at a restaurant in denver, and he had his cook make it up for him. i saw her demonstrate this on tv that's why i remember it so. but the damn sammich is supposed to serve eight peeps; elvis would eat the whole thing by himself.

i also found the "butter dripping down his arms" quote in google.

whenever i hear lmp talking about protecting his image and legacy, i titter a bit. do they really think people are laughing with elvis and not at him when they read about elvis' p-nut butter banana and other culinary delights? yeah, great legacy they're pimping out there...

Hell, a white guy INVENTED the term rock n roll. Alan Freed, a DJ. If you want to argue that point, Google it.

from google: "In 1951, Cleveland, Ohio disc jockey Alan Freed began playing rhythm and blues music for a multi-racial audience. Freed is credited with first using the phrase "rock and roll" to describe the music. However, the term had already been introduced to US audiences, particularly in the lyrics of many rhythm and blues records....Before then, the phrase "rocking and rolling", as secular black slang for dancing or sex, appeared on record for the first time in 1922 on Trixie Smith's "My Man Rocks Me With One Steady Roll"..."

rock n roll was a black slang term for sex. most people know that so there shouldn't be need to argue the point. see, this is what drives black people crazy: the assumption that just because a white person said it or did it, they get to lay claim to having invented it, thought of it first, etc.

next you'll be telling us about the origin of the word 'diss'. betcha think that came from whites, too, huh?
