I agree with him about rave, but someone needs to tell him what comedy is. That's not comedy, it's bitching. The audience is mostly just pretending to laugh.

Well, obviously no one crap ever sells out venues, do they? I mean you've got to be brilliant to sell out a venue because audiences are infallible, and the world is perfect. rolleyes

"Comedians" like this sell because they reflect the worldview of their audience. Pure and simple. Your avatar suggests to me that you are someone who enjoys complaining about modern American ills. No doubt Henry Rollins gives you plenty of that. This is why you like him, but it doesn't make it "comedy". Comedy requires wit and invention to present your idea in a novel (i.e. funny) way. Based on this clip, your man doesn't have it. Sorry.

He is on point about "Rave music" and he is not billed as a comedian most of his shows are billed as "spoken word" He makes good points and people coming out to see you in a sold out venue does mean something as opposed to no one being interested in seeing you at all.

I've already said I agree with what he's saying so that's irrelevant. I'm pleased to hear he's not billed as a comedian, 'cos a comedian (in it's true sense) he ain't, but he's clearly attempting comedy in this clip and there are plenty of people in the audience forcing themselves to smile.

And selling out venues does not in itself mean you're good. You can sell out venues on name value which can be achieved in any number of ways. If memory serves me correctly, this guy achieved stardom as a musician first. He's also a DJ I believe. I'm sure if Prince did a stand up tour, it would sell out. It would not mean he's a good comedian. wink

Wish he would work some swearing into his act.

But for the most part I think he speaks the truth here. These are (some of) the things that makes modern music so fucking shitty nod

Let me repeat again he is not a comedian. He has never been billed as a comedian he just made a funny comment about rave music and some people laughed.
I think if you can sell out venues both large and small the people, buying tickets think you are good at what you do. In the end, that is all that really matters. Everybody who brought a ticket to this show knows Henry is a spoken word artist. Everybody that goes to see Prince expects to see a musical concert. Rather makes the point of the artist being good in your opinion a non-issue.

You really should concentrate more when you're talking to people. I said "if Prince did a stand up tour it would sell out. It wouldn't mean he was a good comedian". "Stand up" means "stand up comedy". Get it? wink

The point is, this guy (Henry Rollins) is a famous musician. Therefore he has name value. Name value sells tickets. This is the point. If Joni Mitchell did a "spoken word" tour I'd go and see it because I like her. It wouldn't mean that she was any good at it though.

It's fine if you want to defend this guy, but you need to find a better way of doing it. Saying "he's good because he sells out venues" is an intellectually bankrupt argument.

Jesus H Christ!!! Your so busy being arrogant and all knowing that you don't realize that just maybe being good at something is up to the audience that wants to go out and buy Henry's CD and see him in concert.

It is really a matter of opinion. I think dirty south rap sucks and would not go to a concert if the tickets were free but some young morons think these guys are talented and good at what they do and for that audience they are talented and good at what they do. I just don't see it they way.

You need to watch it with the intellectually bankrupt shit. This is just a message board and it is not that deep.

People like to go see his "spoken word" shit because they see his TV show on IFC. They think it's hip and trendy to go see Henry Rollins bitch about the state of the world and the Bush Administration. It has very little to do with his past associations as a member of the group Black Flag or his solo music projects. He's trying to make a buck by taking his 'chat' on the road; plain and simple.

I agree with that. That was what I said earlier. But didn't he get his TV gig because of his musical career? (not that it matters, since I totally agree with what you said)

I don't know how he got his TV show on IFC. It's been several years now and I'm not sure it's even still on anymore. He never did perform music that much on his show so I don't know if that was why he got the show in the first place. It was probably because he was so outspoken and he made a pitch to someone at IFC or vice versa.
