Walmart Phasing Out Music Sales...And That Revenue Isn't Coming Back http://www.alleyinsider.c...-any-other
Coming soon to Wal-Mart: The new AC/DC album. Not coming to Wal-Mart for much longer: Most other music. Following in the footsteps of the Eagles and Journey (and Garth Brooks, too), Sony's (SNE) AC/DC will sell its next CD exclusively at Wal-Mart. The WSJ notes that this has worked very well for both the retailer and the handful of artists that have cut deals with the chain. But the paper also notes that Wal-Mart, like the rest of the big box retailers, no longer sees the value in selling music in general, and is cutting back on the rest of its offerings: But even as it strikes novel deals with a handful of artists and labels, Wal-Mart is preparing changes in its approach to selling the vast majority of music. It is unclear what the upshot of those changes will be, but one likely scenario involves cuts in the number of music titles the chain carries... Wal-Mart executives, frustrated by perennially declining CD sales, have been quietly exploring changes in their approach to selling music. The company has described different versions of its potential new strategy to different players in the music industry. This is a trend that's been developing for some time, and one we wrote about last year: All of the big retailers have been cutting back on the amount of space they're dedicating to music sales. But a retail cutback could be much more damaging than any single year revenue decline. In a worst-case scenario, and one we think is quite likely, a cutback sets off a self-fulfilling prophecy: Retailers stock less music, so consumers have less to choose from, and then buy even less, causing retailers to stock even less. Repeat. But isn't this good news for Amazon, iTunes and everyone else who sells music online? Won't people who can't get a CD at Wal-Mart head to the Web to instead? We don't think so. Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT), Best Buy (BBY) sell the majority of music in this country, but they're generally not selling it to people who are looking to buy music. They're at the store to buy a refrigerator, or socks, or whatever. Reduce the amount of floorspace you dedicate to music, and those sales go away. And they're not coming back, period. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Funny you mention Target. That's where I usually get my cds anyway. The only drawback to Target is that they don't carry a lot of "old" stuff. Wal-Mart carries a lot of classic albums on cd (depending on the Wal-Mart you go to). You can also stumble up on imports and singles at Walmart and you don't get those at Target. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I rarely get new joints unless I'm interested in picking it up and recently I've set to buy DVDs and stuff I really need, lol.

Walmart never had any music in their store that was worth a damn anyway. All they carried was the most popular stuff, and that goes for old as well as new stuff.
Best Buy isn't much better. They have some good stuff on their website, but just like Walmart, in their stores is nothing but the most popular stuff, both old and new. I buy all my CDs from a local owned store called Be-Bop Records here in town, which has three locations. However, the best selection I had seen in town for years was in Circuit City but they started phasing out a lot of their old stuff and adding more of the new bullshit. Andy is a four letter word.

Thank You, called this awhile ago, and i just witnessed it in the Best Buy in midtown NYC, they were downsizing their entire music stock and music dvd stock, sending back 40% of it also. Its here folks, its over, the thought that these stores could sell their shit for 9.99 is over, common sense, you cant sell it for 9.99 and pay 13-14 for it from the label, these stores cannot function at that loss anymore and music is NOTHING but a loss to these stores, the reason its hurting more now, is that the interest in music is nowhere near where it was years ago, plus the other things that these stores sell, like electronics, tvs etc..are not making money for them like they used to, so when you look at the big picture you get rid off what is losing you money, MUSIC, later, bye bye nice knowing. And trust me this will trickle down to little mom and pop stores, indie shops and things like that, ive seen a few NYC "trademark" stores close already over this summer, also VIrgin will be closing both stores by the end of next year, possibly sooner. Ultimately this will be a good move for people who love music.
The more money out of the industry the better. Then maybe it will get back to real artists, in it for the love of what they do. Not for the $$$. The music biz got hijacked 10-15 years ago. It's been mostly bullshit since. The Sean Combs "anything for money" mentality ruled the day. They didn't break any real artists, the public lost respect, the internet killed the cd (and nearly the software and video game market, though they fought back by creating locked down proprietary systems ie Vista, XBox, Wii, etc.). I don't know what the future holds, but as long as the public can get the music for free, music sales will suffer, including iTunes, Amazon, etc.

This has been predicted for at least the last 2 or 3 years. I have been wondering when it would actually start to happen. I never bought my music at Wal Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc anyway so I can't say their selection is worse than it used to be.
I agree with whoever said that retail would eventually realize they can't make money selling discs for $10. That may work on itunes or amazon, but not at FYE.

I guess they're good if you want Top 20 and Best ofs neither of which I normally shop for. I rarely if ever came out of Tower empty-handed. The thing is that they all were expensive, Tower,Virgin,Fye and Sam Goody, because there bread and butter is music, they get charge 13-14 dollars for a new title, to turn around and sell it for 9.99? Its a wonder they have even lasted this long, and now Best Buy and Target and Walmart are just tired of losing 3-4 dollars a cd, its not worth it, before it was just a way to eliminate the competetion and steal the music customers, well now there are no music customers to steal, because the music is being stolen for the most part. But this all was started around 2001, this was long coming. Since i left the music retail industry in 2006, cd prices have gone up $2 from labels!! Thats right they are charging the retailers 2 dollars more, this is another reason why you see much quicker 9.99 sales, and much less of them. The thing i think people dont realize is that this WILL hurt the artistry of music in the long run, and i know its cool to say "there will always be music", Ok we get it, no kidding. BUT it takes a little money to function, trust me, i make indie films and even if you just want to get into festivals, im not talking theaters, im talking FREE festivals, you need to invest thousands of dollars. The same goes for indie artists, it does cost some money to work your own site, book your own shows etc...and after awhile of losing money and losing money, just like the music retail goes, new artists will go to.
