Y'know that 4Hero tune features your boy Larry Mizell on vocals and additional keys....

Hey Paligap!

I've been playing your mix a lot traveling about last week and still do. I haven't been playing this genre (nu-soul, alternative soul, electro soul, whatever) much the last few years, but I used to follow it closely. Sometimes the genre becomes a bit too much easy-listening, like those late-night jazz stations. Initially I expected this mix to be like this, but it has pulled me in. Starting with names like Lewis Taylor and Stephen Simmonds my interest was awakened. Then I found out how intense and deep some of the tracks were, yeah you got me back on the alternative soul track. Quick runtrough:

2.Nathan Haines featuring Tama Waipera - "Hold On"

Like already pointed out, his lazy way of singing with a lot of breath reminds me of John Legend. Like it!

3.Stuart Zender/AZUR - "Picture In My Heart"

I didn't know about this canceled album, thanks for that. I believe Zender has had a lot to do with why I loved Jamiroquai. It hasn't been the same since he left. Great to hear the break in the middle of the song where Zender stretches it Jami-style. It's a shame that they choose the two-step style, this sounds very MJ Cole-ish, or even that single by Jamiroquai "do you know where you're coming from".

5.Ian O' Brien - "Where Does the Past End"

Groove is good, but it doesn't really know where to go. Still knows how to dodge most traps that a lot of fusion music steps into.

7.4Hero - "Play With The Changes"

4hero usually blends into the background with that easy-late-night-shallow sound. This track is different. I like it a lot!

8. Lewis Taylor - "Cherry Blossom"

This man! The vocals! That little extra at the end where the drums are put higher in the mix! That chorus! Wow!

9.Quintessence - "30th Hour"

I thought Lewis would take the cake, but no. This track is a trip in itself! I thought this was an excellent song after about 5 minutes. Then came that ending with the horns, my god! I had to pullover before I crashed my bike! Got my groove on at the side of the road. Brilliant!

10.Stephen Simmonds - "I Hope U Do"

The only track I knew and loved. Fits in nicely. Excellent debut album, a bit down, but very lovely. Overlooked as well.

Really loved your mix Paligapper! Musically close to home for me. Quintessence as my fave!

I really liked this mix. It was interesting, challenging, easy, hip, contemporary...

I agree with Sander that my knee-jerk reaction when the music started was that it was going to be a little too "quiet storm" for me, but knowing your taste I should have known better.

These mixes show that there is so much good music out there that most of us never hear. Why are we talking about the Pussycat Dolls & Jay Z? confuse

I am in a bad place for listening to music right now, though. No car stereo! mad

Yeah... as far as I can gather, the 9 tunes being circulated are the ones they had pretty much finished, but that one wasn't quite complete---so yeah, it just kinda hits a wall, lol

OKay, I was wondering about that too. I thought maybe you sent me a bad version. lol

OMG! love heart this mix! It is so rich drool This is a mix I would love to and could make, if only I had the material confused OK, now I'm starting to get really sad sad All of these projects expose the holes and missing worlds in my musical collection. bawl I have a huge collection but still I have heard of none of these artists, except The Magnificent Lewis Taylor, or any of these songs. There is just still so much out there to explore.

OK, I have a confession. I have secretly sought your approval over the time I've seen you in this forum. redface I have the greatest respect for your tastes and your opinions and I even sent you a mix wondering what you thought of it but you barely noticed pout lol Oh well, now it's out in the open smile

  • Strange light - I really enjoy the laidback vibe of this song. Dark lounges, cool vibes, sweet times. mushy
  • Hold on - I TOTALLY DIG this guy's voice touched
  • Picture in My heart - This is tied for favorite. worship Love the instrumentation and that falsetto is so lucious love Interestingly the two favorites have nothing much in common. I agree that Jamiroquai lost something along the way and it very well may be the absense of this ingredient. Traveling without moving is such a killer album and if this guy had anything to do with creating the sound they had I can see why they feel so different after that album. I haven't really felt them at all since.
  • One Objective Not sure why but I feel a 70s vibe off this. It's not overtly 70s but something about the horns send me back to 70s music shows with black dudes dressed in suits with their dance routines and vocal stylings.
  • Where Does the Past End - Very cool instrumental smile How old is this cut?
  • Residue - I like your description. Very cinematic nod I can picture a different voice for this (Skye Edwards) but it's still very very cool.
  • Play with The Changes - Reminds me of being on vacation lol
  • Cherry Blossom - Just knew he'd be on your mix! clapping It is shocking how little known he is since he is so talented. I first heard of him through our Indie radio station and they played "Stoned" and I went eek who. is. THAT?! Then I find out that he is not a new artist and I'm like why the hell have I never heard of him? pissed I only have the lost album and stoned part 1. Are there many tracks outside his proper albums? It seems like he would have a prolific thumbprint outside of the "industry". Love love love this dude clapping This song is a total sneaker. You really don't expect too much greatness from the way it starts out but of course, we are dealing with Lewis Taylor so the goods are delivered lol Great choice of song. thumbs up!
  • The 30th Hour - This is my other favorite biggrin I worship this chick's voice worship Love that they found time beyond time. 6 more hours of it lol clapping This song feels like a cocoon, a womb, safe and warm and made for dreaming about infinite possibilities cloud9
  • I Hope You Do Perfect closer nod

This was a wonderful mix and I am not surprised coming from you. So glad that you participated in this project hug

I will say that I was surprised and at the same time not surprised at how good this mix was.

My choosing "Residue" as my fave is me responding more to the melody that anything else. The musicianship on the other tracks may be more exciting or just plain better, but the chorus on "Residue" just hits the bullseye dead center for me and that trumps everything else. For the same reason, "Hold On" comes in second. I love when a song floors you with a killer chorus.

J Most - "Strange Light" - I hear a lot of Prince in this one. I agree with you about it's dreamlike quality.

Nathan Haines featuring Tama Waipera - "Hold On" - Like I said earlier, the chorus of this song really draws me in. It isn't much, but the way it flips the song melody-wise makes me want to hear it over and over.

Stuart Zender/AZUR - "Picture In My Heart" - There's a lot going on in this track most notably the complex drum pattern. I like how everything gets thrown in during the chorus. The instrumental break in the middle is very nice too. Too bad it isn't finished!

Peven Everett - "One Objective" - The repetition in this song is in sharp contrast to the last track and after awhile the groove becomes almost trance-like.

Ian O' Brien - "Where Does the Past End" - My dad would love this with all its fusion influences. The dreamy ethereal synths in the chorus are very nice.

Hefner - "Residue" - When the first verse begins, it doesn't sound very promising, but then the bridge hints at something better and finally the chorus comes and I'm floored. Best melody in the entire mix.

4Hero - "Play With The Changes" - Interesting transition from the electronic squiggles to the more traditional piano-sounding keys later on. And more dreamy synths that float in and out. I love that.

Lewis Taylor - "Cherry Blossom" - I like the muted percussion in this one. There are lots of understated elements in this track. Is that a very quiet electric guitar I'm hearing in the second verse?

Quintessence - "30th Hour" - A logical followup to "Cherry Blossom", this song is similarly muted most of the time. The drums are almost like a heartbeat that the singer is hearing from the person to whom she's singing "We have to stay awake".

Stephen Simmonds - "I Hope U Do" - The drums here almost sound too harsh after listening to the last two songs. This is another example I think where the chorus is a nice payoff.

Well worth the wait, this one was.

grammar.

OMG, Really???? I rememnber you sent me a great mix a couple of years ago that I thought was amazing--I was sure I wrote back about it(please accept my apologies if I didn't)-- (I remember when I heard the N'Dea Davenport tune, I thought, man, that's my favorite ,too!) in fact, I wanted to send a mix of my own back in return, but I ended up getting so confused about what to put on it--I kinda got frustrated with the whole thing and never finished, lol

1. J Most-- "Strange Light"
I really have to check out more of his stuff! Love the guitar on this one.

2.Nathan Haines featuring Tama Waipera - "Hold On"
Nice tune. I like the guitar work on this one, too. It kinda rocks hard without rocking hard if that makes sense.

3.Stuart Zender/AZUR - "Picture In My Heart"
It's seems as if the other instruments are chasing the drums and once the bass catches it everything falls into place lol Love the ending too.

4.Peven Everett - "One Objective"
This is a fave! Love the groove.

5.Ian O' Brien - "Where Does the Past End"
I like what he's trying to do here, but if you're digging this you should check out some Dam-Funk. he puts a new twist on this sound.

6.Hefner - "Residue"

I don't need to tell you that I'm a fan. Incredible song

7.4Hero - "Play With The Changes"
Some nice funk here. This tune reminds me of gonesh incense, afro's and ganja smoke. lol The second movement is a slick transition. I've been hearing a lot about this group but never heard anything by them. I'll have to investigate further!

8. Lewis Taylor - "Cherry Blossom"
I don't know. I love the first one Lewis put out and all, but this track seemed a bit lathargic. lol towards this end it picked up but the first half was frustrating.

9.Quintessence - "30th Hour"
Now this is my fave out of the whole mix! I can't belive funk like this is coming out of Sweden? lol (no offense Funkenstein mr.green) brilliant tune!

10.Stephen Simmonds - "I Hope U Do"
Nice way to take out the mix.

Quintessence - "30th Hour" starstarstarstarstar
Cool mix, nice flow, but expected nothing else but from you.

Played this a couple of times for some friends during a 5 hour drive up north and back, every song they were like "who's that" lol

i'm having fun! i've been listening, but the whole muxtape fiasco threw me off, then i got extremely busy with work. anyone who's uploaded their mix to 8 tracks has gotten a couple listens from me. 8 tracks is the bomb i can't wait to do another one, but i don't know if the club will be interested for another round. lol maybe we can recruit some new members? count me in if it survives.
