George Duke's new CD 'Dukey Treats' is released today---features Sheila E.,Teena Marie,Rachelle Ferrell and others

Veteran keyboardist and producer George Duke remembers a time when funk was a powerful force not just in popular music but in social discourse.Frequently with a measure of wit and irony, and often with a strong dose of positivity at the core, titans like James Brown,Sly and the Family Stone and other funk icons of the 60s and 70s boldly addressed societal concerns ranging from poverty to racial disharmony to the battle of the sexes.Among the numerous treats on this album are not just the songs themselves but the roster of high-profile personnel helping to bring them to life, many of them alumni of Duke's earlier bands and projects.Included on the guest list are bassist Christian McBride, percussionist Sheila E. and trumpheter Michael Patches Stuart,to name a few.Along with Duke himself, the vocal crew includes Jonathan Butler,Howard Hewitt,Teena Marie,Rachelle Ferrell and more.(Amazon editorial review)

I listened to the sound clips on Amazon.com and I like what I heard music Some tracks are laid-back and jazzy, while other tracks are pure,retro-sounding funk! "Are You Ready" has a pleasant,EW&F-vibe to it.This sounds like a perfect "holiday album"...you know, the type of CD you'll have playing in the background during the upcoming holiday get-togethers.

I figured this one would be right up your alley. biggrin

It plays like a tribute to Funk & Soul music of the 70s.
(P-Funk, Marvin, EW&F, Headhunters, etc)

Just a fun FUNKY/SOULFUL album that retains the sophisticated musicianship of George Duke.
Not to mention Jef Lee Johnson's superb guitar work.

He even gives a few musical nods to one of his 70s employers Frank Zappa.
(Zappa vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock even guests on vocals)

Yes, I think we know it's a play on his name, but this new album title is an allusion to "Dukey Stick".

I also like the fact that he injected a bit of contemporary social consciousness with...
