Why wasn't Madonna at the "We Are The World" session? I ask because so much shit has been given to Prince for the way he contributed to the project (and that night in general). But M was big enough at the time to garner an invitation. Did she get one? Did she decline?

Inquiring minds ya'll... she wasn't invited no one expected her to last. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

I could have sworn she presented Prince with an AMA hat night. I've been known to be wrong in the past though.

My guess is,she probably wasn't invited. There are alot of artists who should have been on that recording but weren't: Aretha Franklin,Donna Summer (whose 1982 hit "State Of Independence" was producewd by Quincy Jones and is the song that inspired USA For Africa),etc.
Back in those days, many people assumed that Madonna wouldn't last very long anyway. It's amazing how she has proven them wrong.

The same reason that Rick James, Bobby Nunn, Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn, Van Halen, The Barkays, and so many other artists weren't a part of it. They just weren't. The studio only holds so many people. Andy is a four letter word.

she would have been her own competitor since Crazy For You came out at the same time!

How the hell could they have Sheila E.'s non singin' ass there and not some of those people u listed? The only reason Sheila went was because Prince sent her in his place. But yeah, they didn't even consider Madonna cuz at that stage, they thought she was just a flash in the pan. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. You guys aren't the most perceptive bunch are you? Let me break it down for y'all. At the time of that recording Madonna was riding high with "Material Girl". A song which celebrated materialism and selfishness. It was done in a playful way, but nonetheless it clearly reflected that '80s ethos of looking out for number one. The other thing Madonna was known for was flashing her underwear on the MTV Awards. All this ran contrary to what USA For Africa was meant to be about. Having her there would have undercut the "sincerity" of the venture (please note the inverted commas around "sincerity"). Your question has now been answered. Thank you. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Wow. Somebody needs to get some. Listen, questions get asked around here all time. Some answers are more obvious than, but that doesn't negate a persons need or want for information that somebody else on this message board might have. Know that before you go around calling folks unperceptive. That said, your theory about Madge's participation is utter shite. If yer reasoning holds true, then why pray tell, was Sheila E. there? If I recall correctly, her only accomplishment as a solo artist at the time was "THE GLAMOROUS LIFE". I know she might have been there as a Purple Rep, and/or as a friend of Lionel's, but there she was in the front row nonetheless. Your card has been pulled. Thank you.

First off my post was not referring to you. The question was perfectly reasonable. It was the responses I was dissing. If you read my post more closely you would've seen that. It's also clear from your Sheila E comments that you totally did not understand what I typed out. I ain't gonna explain it again.
