"New York Town" by Rick James appreciation thread

I am really digging New York Town by Rick James. I just recently dug out some of my old vinyl and started listening to this song again.

It is a very under rated song from the "Cold Blooded" album. Anyone else with me on this track?
"Always blessings, never losses......"

"....i can open my-eyes "underwater"..there4 i will NOT drown...." - mzkqueen03 eek lol

I love this song.I've actually been listening to it a little more lately. It had a different feel to it, and yes, Cold Blooded was an under rated album. At that point in his career, he was trying to change his sound to stay fresh, and it was needed ('Superfreak', 'Hard To Get', '69 Times'). So this was an important album for him.

There's some okay cuts on "The Flag" but you could tell that Rick wasn't as into the music as he was into the high life at that point. If your a die hard Rick James fan like me add it to your collection, if your just a casual fan you probably won't like it.

'The Flag' is a lousy album disbelief You can't even tell one song from the next....every track sounds identical. The production is cold and over-synthesized.

I prefer "Cold Blooded" to "Street Songs" as an album, though I can see why "Street Songs" was bigger.

P.I.M.P the S.I.M.P is another great track from this album

"There's always a party in ole New York, New York Town" biggrin

Here's Rick performing the track on the short-lived NBC show, The New Show:

There are plenty of synths on this album, also alot of drum machines. The production is cold and robotic....you will love it lol

Rick was feuding with Motown at the time,so I think he purposely turned in a sub-par album....you know, just to fulfill his contractual obligations.

"Doin' It / New York Town" forms basically my favourite musical moment from Rick.

I also play them to most anyone who comes over to my house for a visit. biggrin

I to am a die hard RJ fan, and I love 'The Flag' I think it is a good album, and it isn't lost on me that that, he was synth'd out over most of the album. But there are some good songs on it.
-Forever and a Day, Free To Be Me, Save It For Me (one of my favorites), Slow and Easy (and Interlude), and Painted Pictures.

I think it is an underrated album, the songwriting on it is tight.
