He's still releasing CDs and he's still signed to a label. How is he a wanna-be? Who is he wanting to be? I don't understand. Please clarify.

You know that the rumor was that Def Jam didn't want him anymore and was about to drop him. They ended up "trading" him over to Atlantic Records for Fabolous (I believe). Kind of funny that either of them failed to have big albums last year.

I didn't know that. I'm not surprised. Def Jam is a sucky label. The best artist new they have over there is Chrisette Michele. They know how to handle rap but they suck at handling R&B. There's this stereotypical hierarchy at rap labels that play out like the old stereotypical layers of labels when rock was at the top 40. They cater to their "real artists" first - for them its the rappers. Rappers in general seem to have a bit of resentment towards male singers. I think there's a jealousy factor. They mask it with alpha-male bullshit. "I'm real" and all that mess when the truth is that most of them don't have a lot of talent outside of writing lyrics. When they become label heads (Jay-Z, etc.) they bring the macho attitude and it affects their business decisions until the big bosses (owners) start asking about their money. Def jam is and always will be primarily a rap "boy's club" even though I'm sure Rihanna is probably pulling in the bulk of their profits. (well, along with Kanye)

Egads, you think Musiq's a "good songwriter?"...why?

I've explained this before. There was a thread on Omarion's "Icebox" and on that thread I think I spoke on how well thought out Musiq's lyrics are. While most other lyricists focus on slick wording, his lyrics ring of sincerity. Peep the lyrics to Teach Me. That's real talk! Its reminiscent of Marvin Gaye. Its none of that slick "check out how many ways I can say I wanna fuck you" talk but its a sincere conveying of most men's inability to communicate in relationships mixed with their contrasting desire to do so but lacking the understanding of how to.
Check "Love", where he uses the dichotomy of Love as being a woman and an emotion as he talks to it/her. Sometimes you have to look beyond the surface to appreciate the work.

Okay, I see where you're coming from. You think Musiq is a good lyricist. Gotcha.

(He's not).

They aren't so far. The song has been at radio for over a month and hasn't done a thing.

It's get's play here in the clubs in Philly though, so one half is complete Lol!!

Isn't he from Philly? That would explain why its getting play there.

I have heard it on XM's The City a few times, but they have stopped playing it also.

You cannot front on "Love" or "Teach Me", the music is beautiful the lyrics
are miles above anything in R&B now and he sings his ass off. That said he still needs to step up his live game.
We gonna come on with the come on, gonna get down with the get down!

Maybe so, but that high note toward the end of "Love" makes dogs run for cover.
