A 40 year-old listens to 18-24 y-o music for five days So wifey and I are on a little vacation. We have listened to the L.A. radio station Power 106 for five straight days anytime we are in the car. A friend of mine used to be the program director there and I would always marvel at how tight their rotation of songs was.
Things haven't changed. (Forgive me if I do not know who some of these tunes are by) Clearly - the song being spun the most is Dangerous (Akon sings in it - and the rapper if it isn't Ludacris - sure sounds like him). You can hear this song at least once an hour, sometimes twice in 60 minutes. We both think we've heard Chris Brown's Forever as the second most played. (Wifey likes that song!). Next on the spin-o-meter we think is the Game/Keyshia Cole song. Wifey says Game IS NOT the savior of West Coast Rap. Lil Wayne is in there somewhere too with Power 106 spinning about three different songs by him. I just don't get the fascination with him. For the most part I am not wild at all about what I have heard. I don't listen to the radio much at all at home. To try and throw in some POSITIVITY - I do really like The Dream's I Luv Your Girl. (Part of me feels so bad - but OOOO not THAT bad) I also like the latest Ice Cube song they are playing. Is there a good radio station (traditional - not web) out there anywhere? Ha ha. I gave up trying to stay hip to that whole scene some time ago but every once in a while I try to catch up. I just don't hear much soul in any of it. No one is playing an instrument so there are no inflections that give good music character. I should have mentioned Jay Z too. Jockin' Jay Z is one we've heard a ton.

My sister visited L.A. last month for about a week. She said the whole time she was there, that she and her husband listened to only one station which was an old school station that played nothing but funk, disco, and R&B from the 1970s and 1980s. Hell, we need a station like that here in Mississippi. We've had old school R&B stations but they were the kind that only played crossover R&B. Andy is a four letter word.

St Louis had one of the BEST old school stations ever. Once I heard them play "Day By Day (Every Minute of The Hour) by the COntinental 4 and "Let Me Try" by the Odds & Ends.. THAT WAS IT Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Might've been HOT 92.3 ("Old School and R&B" is their tagline) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Has anyone noticed that the melody for that song was lifted from Luther Vandross' "Any Love"? You expect a lot of current hip-hop and R&B to be recycling old songs, but apparently it has spread to club music as well. Here's a current club hit from September called "Cry for you": The melody sounds awfully similar to this 80's new wave classic:

A station that plays lesser known songs and not just the extremely popular ones. Andy is a four letter word.

Might've been HOT 92.3 ("Old School and R&B" is their tagline) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 That might be it because she said she only found one, or maybe two stations, that were even worth listening to. She said she was disappointed because she figured that a city as big as L.A. would have tons of jams...not just old ones, but new ones also. I asked her what else was all over the radio and she said...."The same old bullshit that we have down here....hip hop". I said...."Correction....you mean shit hop". A lot of folks down here around my age seem to think that because this is Mississippi that we either don't get the jams that the big cities get or are slow getting them. Hell, I knew better because in this day and age with all the cable channels, satellites, internet, and other technology that is on a national and worldwide level, it's apparant that ain't noboby jammin' nowhere. Shit hop has contaminated the entire planet. Forget about "global warming", we need to focus on "shit hop ruining". . . . [Edited 8/15/08 9:04am] Andy is a four letter word.

What is your definition of "good"? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 I guess a "good radio station" would sound like my i-pod! ...Diverse in soulful R&B, and funk - with radio personalities that actually know music. A place where I can hear anything from the latest Raphael Saadiq, to old classics from Shock, Sun, Brick, Dynasty, etc... plus - I want this dream station to be deep into the whole Minneapolis scene, spiced with some approved cuts from trusted emcees like Common, Talib Kweli, Rakim, Chuck D., etc... A good radio station would have skilled DJ's that can keep a mix both on beat and in the right key.

You subjected yourselves to this on your vacation? I can't stand 5 minutes of it, let alone 5 freaking DAYS
May I suggest listening to the online feed at www.957fm.com. Excellent mix of 60s-80s funk, disco, motown, yacht rock, all that is good. Tomorrow night, Sat 7-12 is the disco party - we live for that shit.
