Oh God, that's what happened to me with Babyface's "Whip Appeal" and it backfired on me! I hated that damn song and the radio played it soooo much that I could recognize it from the very first note. A friend was riding with me and I heard that note and changed the station. She immediately hollered...."Hey, change that back, that's Whip Appeal!" Apparently, she knew it from the very first note also. And to make it even worse, she sang along with the damn song....loudly. lol

They do that to any eighties slower R&B joint that comes on! lol

Oh Lord, and "Superwoman" by Karyn White is the absolute worst! Those heffers throw their hands up immediately and go to hollerin'. lol

Actually, she bores me much more than Shitney does. It's Shitney I can't stand though because she had a major influence on a lot of artists that followed her.

Freddie Jackson was another dull one that was overplayed during that era also. Label backing or not, these type of artists tried to appeal to older crowds also so naturally radio was going to get a lot of requests from kids, young adults, and also people's mamas. I guarantee you, very few mamas called up and requested someone like Rick James. lol All this type stuff helped to change music to dull forever though. I mean, how many mamas like to throwdown. Daddies maybe, but during this time, daddies (and guys in general) were pussy whipped by their girlfriends' tastes. Luckily, I didn't have that problem. lol

I want to buy Karyn White's debut cause I love secret rendevous and the way you love me so much, but I really don't like superwoman and the slow stuff sounds really boring even if she has a nice voice

I prefer rick james over those artists you mentioned too, I like my singers to be full of energy and crazy in a good way.

I agree here. I believe mid 86 is when music started to get watered down.
You had lead singers leaving groups funk or otherwise to go solo and get riches.
It worked for lionel and jeffrey osborne. Around this time even luther was watering down his music with give me the reason and stop for love. I remember mary davis leaving the sos band for a solo album that flopped. Yes it seemed like when whitney houston hit the scene a lot of R&b followed suit trying to get that crossover appeal ala atlantic starr during the barbara weathers era.
bored Til this day i can't forgive that heifer for putting my ass to sleep during a concert as i was waiting for the barkays to take the stage. lol

Very true. Finally someone that understands what I'm talkin' about. Yeah, there a few good songs in the late 1980s but a lot, if not most of them, were watered down either adult contemporary R&B or attempts at crossover. It's like folks just gave up on jammin' and did every thing they could to gain the widest audience possible. And when you try to gain kids, grandmas, soccer moms, and yuppies, you can just throw the funk and anything fun out the window.
