Surfin' Bird... The Chantays - Pipeline The Astronauts - Baja A couple more that were pretty hot back in the day. Manic Depression's a frustrating mess!... tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 A lot of bands covered "Surfin Bird" Pipeline sounds familiar. I think I've heard it before. Yeah, those Jimi lyrics ring true right now. I feel stuck. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

I've been loving this little group for some months now. They use a lot of sound bites from old horror & sci-fi movies.
http://www.myspace.com/messerchups They combine surf with electronic elements. They're one of the bands that covered "Surfin Bird". Their version is awesome. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

It's just that I don't consider them surf music. yeah the Beach boys are not surf music [to me, either] because they don't have the guitar. That guitar sound defines surf music--not to mention most surf music was instrumental, wasn't it? They are really coming out of the Phil & Ronnie Specter tradition, but just happened to sing a bout surfing & be called the Beach Boys. I think we're probably just bangin' heads over terminology - Surf Music vs Surf Guitar. Surf Music imo would encompass early Beach Boys/Jan & Dean and the instrumental bands. Surf Guitar would be isolated to the instrumental bands we've been talking about. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. They sound kind of distinct from each other IMO, but they might have sprung from the same traditions or been part of the same movement. [Edited 8/14/08 16:38pm] My Legacy

Maybe a little off track but if you take the Surf Guitar concept and add some attitude and distortion...
...you might enjoy some Link Wray ("Jack The Ripper" & "Rawhide") (see "Rumble" earlier in the thread) Supposedly a big influence on Pete Townsend. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. (see "Rumble" earlier in the thread) Supposedly a big influence on Pete Townsend. Link certainly had a style that was in the ballpark. He passed away 3 years ago at age 76 and he was from North Carolina.

my favorite surf music would be the sound track from "Morning of the Earth". I don't know if it is what your looking for, but if you love to surf, this movie is worth a look and the music is really pretty

I can't say I like the genre enough to call myself a fan, but there are some songs I like very much. Jack Nitzsche's "The Last Race" is a song I fell in love with as a kid when I heard it in a beach scene from the (horrid) Roger Corman-esque film Village of the Giants. I had no idea what the title was, and the tune stuck in my head literally for decades until -- again -- Quentin Tarantino unburied it to be the title track for Death Proof.
