There is this one song I hear all the time that is a carbon copy of How Will I Know. The percussion in the beginning is similar and then it has a hook similar to the song and it is in the same key as How Will I Know towards the end when the key changes. Do you know which song I'm talking about?

Both songs were produced by Narada Michael Walden and you can hear the similariites in the hook/chorus."Who's Zoomin Who" sounds like a slower version of "How Will I Know".

yes that's the one, thank you! I thought of Aretha too when I heard the song, but forgot to mention it here. Riding on the Freeway is more enjoyable though when it comes to 80's Aretha.

Oh Lord, I always hated that song for some reason and never knew why. This explains it. You're right, it does sound like a slower version of Shitney's song.

I just never paid that close attention to it. I was too busy changing the radio station as soon as the song came on.

I prefer the one with "Jump To It" and "Get It Right" on it. I don't have the album, just those two 45s. I do have her 1980 album that contains "What A Fool Believes" and "Can't Turn You Loose" and those are the only two songs I like on that particular album.

As for "Who's Zoomin' Who", the only thing I like is "Freeway Of Love". They played damn near every track from that album on the radio so I am familiar with a lot of the other tracks. I hated that album, it sounded like what it was....late 80s...(oh, those were some horrible years).

I hated that one and that's why. That's why those were such horrible years. Everyone was trying so hard to crossover. Speaking of rock though, I did love Aretha's version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash". If I'm gonna listen to pop/rock though, I only like it like I like my funk....hard. None of the midtempo adult contemporary type stuff mixed with it.

A lot of that "Who's Zoomin' Who" album reminds me of another song I hated from the late 1980s. The duet with Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald. That one was dull almost on a Shitney type level.



Actually, I can tolerate that one. It's the B Side of the 45 "Freeway Of Love". The intro to that song sounds kinda "Princely", however I wouldn't rate it as one of my favorite slow songs.



They played that entire album entirely too much. I don't know what was going on during that era. Have you noticed that radio stations severely overplayed music from artists on the Arista label during that time? I mean, damn, was Arista paying them off or something?

I have those two 12 Inches on two different various artists compilations and yes they are great.

Actually, she bores me much more than Shitney does. It's Shitney I can't stand though because she had a major influence on a lot of artists that followed her.

Freddie Jackson was another dull one that was overplayed during that era also. Label backing or not, these type of artists tried to appeal to older crowds also so naturally radio was going to get a lot of requests from kids, young adults, and also people's mamas. I guarantee you, very few mamas called up and requested someone like Rick James. All this type stuff helped to change music to dull forever though. I mean, how many mamas like to throwdown. Daddies maybe, but during this time, daddies (and guys in general) were pussy whipped by their girlfriends' tastes. Luckily, I didn't have that problem.

Oh God, that's what happened to me with Babyface's "Whip Appeal" and it backfired on me! I hated that damn song and the radio played it soooo much that I could recognize it from the very first note. A friend was riding with me and I heard that note and changed the station. She immediately hollered...."Hey, change that back, that's Whip Appeal!" Apparently, she knew it from the very first note also. And to make it even worse, she sang along with the damn song....loudly.
