Artists who were over 30 when they broke into the industry... Seems to be very rare in this age-obsessed industry.

I'm pretty sure Bill Withers was over 30 when...

I'm not sure how to go about this question?
Most artists toil for years (doing gigs at clubs, minor bits here and there, achieve regional/cult praise) before they finally hit the big time. Are we estimating artists based on when they first started dabbling with the craft or when they finally get signed record an album? | |

Well, I know of a lot of artists who released their debuts when they were 30 or older, but were in the industry well beforehand, toiling in minor roles like a drummer, backup singer, session musician, etc. For instance, The Presets (an indie/electronic music duo) got signed Modular/Universal when they were 30+ and released their debut album Beams in 2006. But for years before they got signed, they were still in the industry, but were session musicians for Silverchair and one was a local club DJ with a record on a small label (while in their 20s). So my mind is loopy over this question.  | |

I wasn't thinking so much about when an artist has their commercial peak, but more about artists who managed to break into the industry as a new act past the age of 30.
I really can't think of many... which is very sad. Of course, I'm certain many labels tell their acts to lie about their age and claim to be younger than they really are. Someone like Beyonce for example... I find it hard to believe she is only 26. | |

As I recall, he was close to 40 when he debuted It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Sheryl Crow springs to mind. She was over 30 when Tuesday Night Music Club came out. I think with rap/hip-hop/r&b and pop music you've virtually no chance of breaking into the industry at that age. Particularly rap/hip hop, you're over the hill. Rock music/alternative and country and i think you've a better chance. Those genres are more resistant to trends and i don't think the listeners care as much about the image etc. [Edited 8/11/08 18:55pm] | |
