Officials: Isaac Hayes Died of Stroke

August 12, 2008
Link

Isaac Hayes apparently died of a stroke.

The deep-voiced soul singer died Sunday after he was found unconscious at his Memphis residence.

No autopsy was performed, but paperwork filed by Hayes' family physician, Dr. David Kraus, lists the cause of death as a stroke, sheriff's spokesman Steve Shular said.

Deputies were among the emergency crews that responded after a 911 call, and sheriff's department detectives were looking into the death. Kraus told investigators that he had been treating Hayes, 65, for high blood pressure, Shular said.

Family members found Hayes lying on the floor of his home beside a treadmill that was still switched on.

The baldheaded crooner, who laid the groundwork for disco and whose Theme From Shaft won both Academy and Grammy awards, was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He also acted in movies and provided the voice of Chef, the school cook, on the animated TV show South Park.

He had recently finished work on the upcoming movie Soul Men, in which he played himself. The movie stars Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac, who died on Saturday.

Hayes was hospitalized in 2006 for treatment of exhaustion, family friends said at the time.

I just read an article on him on soul patrol an online magazine. He was do
to perform in philadelphia as part a stax concert. He was the headliner.
The article stated that ticket sales were slow and it's a shame he had to
die to recieve love. The article also stated that he performed at a show
in june and didn't seem well then. He had to be aided to his piano with the
help of a female.
I'll never forget isaac. His shaft album is one of the first i can remember
listening to when i was 6 or 7 years old. I would sneak in the living room and listen to this album often when my dad went to work. I'm still listening
to that same album today. RIP Isaac.

Man, getting a stroke is a nightmare. Angela Bofill survived two strokes but she's now in a coma, isn't she? sad

I'm surprised Isaac was able to be alive for a little while after the first stroke. Also leads me to believe his condition was very grim and makes me wonder "why in the hell was he on a treadmill?" sad The brother was in pain.

Rest in peace.

RIP to another great soul brother.

In his own way, I would definitely place him alongside great contemporaries like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Sly etc.

Even before his solo career proper, Hayes should be considered important for his and Dave Porter's work for Sam and Dave; some of the greatest soul songs of all time.

I particularly like 'Shaft' and his last couple of albums 'Branded' and the contemporaneous instrumental one from 1995. The latter two show he still had it in him.

Rest in Peace, Father of Shaft cool. You left us too soon.

I brought the Shaft soundtrack from my local record shop just last week and I haven't even opened the plastic wrapping off of it. I'll have to listen to it today. These compositions you got from Youtube are wonderful.

I think the whole soundtrack is his masterpiece -- and the Bar Kays and The Movement are on point throughout, moving through Soul, Funk, Jazz and Blues!!

I was gonna post "Cafe Regio's", but namepeace took care of that....
