Yung Berg ft. Amerie - Get Your Number

Contributed by Charlie E.

Listen to More: Club, R&B, Pop, Collaborations
Ah, the allure of the female phone number. Most guys waste hours upon hours of their lives blindly chasing after those 10-digit combinations of lust-filled promise, but only a few have truly mastered the task of scoring them with any sort of frequency. Yung Berg would have you believe that he is one of these lucky individuals. His new track, Can I Get Your Number, is all about “networking” in the club. An especially full-voiced Amerie is also out on the prowl, contributing to one of the more contagious hooks in recent memory, though I can’t imagine that she has too tough a time scoring digits. Can I Get Your Number appears on Berg’s debut album, Look What You Made Me, due out next week.

Damn! I've never seen a thread crash and burn so fast.
Seriously, homegirl needs to stop frontin' like she's still a kid singing hooks for rappers and get her "Disturbia" on. She could blow away a lot of lame chicks in the game if she got a new plan. Since Bey took her shit, she needs to become the anti-Bey. Start singing alt-rock songs, do a couple of duets with some off-the-wall rock bands, dress in black leather or something. Her years are slippin' away from her and once the industry turns the clock on a b*tch, its pretty much a done deal.
Its either this or find a trick like Puffy to ride so he can take care of her.
He's got Cassie up in Trump Towers. You know that chick ain't sold no records.
lol
Seriously, the clock is tickin' on her ass good and plenty fast!

What s'matter? Her shoes on too tight?

The clock is already up on Amerie, mainly because people dont want "different", she cut a different album and it got her dropped and only released overseas. To come out now with some alt-rock shit would look desperate and get her compared to Rihanna, who was in turn ripping off Christina Aguilera (lets be real "Distrubia" is this years "Fighter" even the video is the same) So even though Def Jam signed her to a deal now, LA is only good at spending money, he knows nothing about being "Different" so im hoping Amerie does "Because i love it" part 2 to piss of the label, it wont sell (and no one does anyway) but at least it will be a good record.

It ain't that people don't want different, its that they don't want Amerie being different. I still say she could do it but not without exploiting herself in some way - usless she's willing to go gospel or do Broadway.
Her problem is and will always be (until she changes) that she is "too cute". She's like the "little sister" type. She's Tatiana Ali. She's Meagan Good before the two "big developments" of hers.
The Tatiana Ali of R&B! lol
Seriously, her change would have to be DRASTIC, including her singing style. Most of the time her voice sounds like she's begging or almost whining. If she could sex up that tone of hers and completely change her look; sing a whole different style. Drop a funk rock record like EnVogue did with "Free Your Mind", she could possibly...just MAYBE get peoples' attention long enough to make a difference.
She's too safe right now to be interesting.

I don't want to get into the definition of what a racist is on here. I'll just say this:
I've seen and experienced enough racism in my lifetime to know that Yung Berg is no racist.
Colorstruck? Yes? Ignorant? HELL YES, even to the point where he misued words himself.
Racist? No. Prejudice? Maybe. He didn't build a country off free forced labor and then deny black women of education while socially excluding them and systematically restricting them from financial opportunities or institute legislation against them owning land, nor did he support any of that by doing nothing to stop it while reaping the benefits of said labor and exclusions to better himself and his children.
Don't go there with me on racism.
Dude's a fool, though. Amerie is above him - not because of what he said but the fact that he's wack.

Everyone is safe right now, if you are a top seller, you are safe, i dont see anyone out there thats flipping the script, and the ones that are doing it different are the older more seasoned artists, Rihanna doing a rocky single and looking drugged out is "calculated", just like every pop artist back in the 90's and early 00's, they would do their first record, and then when the second one came out they would always say "this record is more of me" that bullshit line was vomitted out by everyone from Xtina to Justin to Christina Milian to Rihanna and on and on. Amerie dropping a funk record will impress no one, but peeps here on the org, and get her more "industry" fans which she has already, as far as fanfare and charting like Beyonce and Rihanna thats not going to happen regardless of what comes out, safe, unsafe, rock or funk..dont matter, the mainstream audience for the most part cant handle "thinking"

Of course she's not going to chart like Bey or Rih - she's not that type of artist.
You're talking in pop parameters. I'm talking building a fan base. Fan bases are the future and the future is now. Its already understood that CDs are a dying technology and artists will have to have closer communication with their fanbases. Artists like Amerie who have already been promoted enough for people to know who she is can benefit from doing something out of the box. A drastic image change could work for her. It could help get some people on board who only knew of her as a regular R&B chick. Fuck the pop crowd. Fuck mainstream. I'm talking building a fanbase. She got robbed. Matty Knowles stole the style she was about to drop and gave it to his daughter. The best way to come back from something like that is to flip the script, BUT she would have to come harder than she has in the past. She would have to do something that would grab peoples' attention because she's "safe". She doesn't HAVE to be unless she only want to appeal to the mainstream crowd.
She should rock an Anime character-type style. That would set her apart from the R&B pop chicks and give her room to experiment. Change her hair color (anything but blonde) but don't cut it all off. Rock a Pocahontas look.
Something. Anything other than the typical shit. Its that thinking inside the box and safe-playing that has her where she is. She needs to build her following - viral marketing, harder MySpace and Imeem campaigns.
I believe it could be done. It won't be. She's too scared and safe to do anything different.
People accept different (if its good) but somebody has to show it to them first.
She needs 4 tracks to change:
An uptempo track like Janet's "Feedback"
A hot R&B funk rock groove ("Free Your Mind" meets Nine Inch Nails but updated)
A fast dance style track (like LTJ Bukem's "Progression sessions" but NOT a remix of one of her own songs - something NEW)
A fast, synth-heavy R&B groove in the vein of Ciara's "I Proceed"
NO WHINY VOCALS. NO BALLADS. NO TYPICAL MID-TEMPO R&B.
Just Amerie with some hot ass tracks in some hot ass clothes. I bet she could come up on a whole new fanbase. She'd of course have to keep everything hidden until she was ready to drop it all at once or it'll be Beyoncé's new thing or worse - Solange's. lol

well judging by the producers Def Jam has got her thus far she is moving back to her R&B /hip hop roots that she showed on her 1st album(B.Cox,Darkchild,No ID , Will.I.Am) ..

I think what u are suggesting is a bit too drastic and people could smell when something comes off as forced . She just has to be her and hope that she gets enough promotion that people won't to buy her

And there's the problem. She will always be behind Rihanna. With new young artists like Karina coming up, her worth to the label will drop but believe me, they wouldn't mind sucking up any ideas she may have and using them for Rihanna. Labels are dirty.
What I'm suggesting is drastic but not "too drastic" because she needs SOMETHING to set her apart from every other R&B chick.
Having faith in Def Jam will be the end of her public career. Maybe I'm overestimating her. She has the talent but maybe she doesn't have what it takes to rise above what she is.

well she hasn't been the easiest artist to get along with on Columbia

she leaked 1 thing when the label wanted to give it to Jlo
she leaked Gotta Work when the label didn't want to put it on the album
She said she was tru will Because I Love It after the label didn't release Crush on its orginal relase date "they wanna do it next year but i'm not doing it next year"

so yeah she seems to know what has to be done ..... i think she knows that this time

She better have a BIG plan to screw over Def Jam then because De Jam is worse than Columbia. They have all of the wrong people running that label and quick to drop an artist. They are especially hard on women. They value their rappers more. Ask Christina Milian.

But its one or the other, though i think we all would like to believe a label is investing in an artist here, those days are over, long over, this is clearly buy a hit, no one is getting signed now to deals and being allowed "to build", her base is already there, she was able to move a few hundred thousand worldwide of "because i love it" and sell a good number in the states as an import, but of course imports are not tracked. a label will not let her sell 100,000 and do what she thinks is her best, labels gave that up awhile ago. And thats the main problem here, Amerie to me is light years more interesting than Rihanna,Ciara,Beyonce and others put together, i think she could clearly be around longer than all of them because of that, she seems more interested in doing what she wants, and she's got bank, so if this def jam deal ends, she could push the cds herself, an idea that was on the table before this deal. Amerie to me just needs to make sure she gets the "veterans" respect and keeps that respect because that will keep you around.
