It kinda depends on where you are. Some cities have more ASCAP presence than BMI and vice versa. ASCAP has more of a share of all writers and has more presence overall, but BMI will probably give you more personal attention. I'm a member of ASCAP but I was ready to switch at one point.

ASCAP's membership fee is higher than BMI's. But BMI has a history of helping songwriters get their paychecks a little sooner.

Exactly. ASCAP covers more geographically.

Society of European Stage Authors & Composers (SESAC)

Unlike ASCAP & BMI, SESAC doesn't have an open-door membership.

I am going to need to join soon, I think. What do these associations do? Do I need to join?

I went with BMI. I think because a lot of jazz musicians are BMI.

ASCAP: http://www.ascap.com/about/
BMI: http://www.bmi.com/about/?link=navbar

Those 2 pages will give you a general overview of what they do.
Then you can decide if you really need the services they provide.

I've been with BMI since the mid 70s and have seen no reason to change.

Been trying to contact an acquaintance that has had a massive catalog with both organizations to see if he had an opinion one way or another.

I spoke with a friend who's been affiliated with both organizations and he told me the only major difference between the 2 organizations is that...

...ASCAP has better parties! smile
