Oh, sure, MODS get 11 tunes?!
Supa is right, this mix definitely has a soundtrack vibe. Or like a Tom Waits album by other people. I'm just now listening, but so far I really like that High Llamas song. I wonder what the vocal version sounds like? [Edited 8/8/08 10:50am] My Legacy

Say what?!? Okay, Anxiety is disqualified! Banned. Clean-up duty. Seven years, hard labor. Take him away! Supa is right, this mix definitely has a soundtrack vibe. Or like a Tom Waits album by other people.
You know, I had the exact same thought with a few songs. The electro feel is not quite Tom Waits though...

[Edited 8/8/08 10:50am] a couple of people have asked that now. the lead singer of high llamas (sean o'hagen) has a voice that reminds me a lot of donald fagen, only maybe slightly softer. here are the lyrics: take care to avoid the heavy stuff i give up, this literature is fluff trawled through sketches of notes the night before chased the baffled employess floor to floor hung a 'do not disturb' on glass swing doors fabled diaries written to be read creaking uprights ring through Nissen sheds you are clearly a man of influence your collectable tales do so impress now the world can enjoy your savvy sense this poor devil does not want to be an out of habit radio emcee. and he sensed the unease, the Governor's worse treated baffled colonials rhyme and verse now I will not expect that visit first

This mix is definitely an Anxiety comp. Right now the Sarolta Zaratnay song stands out the most. That's the closest sounding to the kind of music I usually play. I'll make specific comments after a few more listens.

I've enjoyed every mix so far, but going over 10 songs might make listening to them slouch toward work. I noticed Anx's 11th song, but I thought it was fine considering the Haack song was so short. Great set!!!! BTW, My dad had the Dick Hyman - Moog record back when it first came out, and I grew up on that!!!! Topless Dancers of Corfu was actually one of the first tracks I ever heard as a child, So, that's a sentimental favorite!!!! (btw, Dick has to have one ofthe most unintentionally hilarious names in the music business...) ... There's a lot to like on this one. In addition to Sarolta, I find the tracks by Dick Hyman, Vincent Gallo and The High Llamas particularly appealing. Marianne Faithfull and Astrud Gilberto back to back sound almost like one continuous song, they are so similar in mood.
I think the Residents deserve a posted pic for anyone here that has never seen them: cut & paste error [Edited 8/9/08 17:17pm]

Bruce Haack & Esther Nelson - Upside Down - This sounds like it's taken from one of those underground psychedelic films that make no sense. The fact that it's so short adds to its strangeness. Before you know it, it's over and you wonder if you actually heard what you thought you did or if you just imagined it.
Sarolta Zaratnay - Fekete Beat - I could listen to a whole album of this. It's like sexy go-go cabaret in a hidden European dive. Dick Hyman - Topless Dancers of Corfu - It took a few listens before I liked this one. Those kooky kazoo-like keys(?) are very charming. They remind me of the score for Vampyros Lesbos. Every time the vampire was going to attack, you'd hear that kooky kazoo. Moondog - Moondog Monologue - Who cares what this dude is saying. It's all about that crazy beatnik background track! Off-kilter and mesmerizing, combined with his droning, it's like staring into the Ringmaster's hat: David Lynch - Ghost of Love - Spooky spaghetti western music. Very cool. Vincent Gallo - I Wrote This Song for the Girl Paris Hilton - This is my second favorite song on the mix. The repetition is wonderfully hypnotic. How Paris Hilton could have inspired this nice piece of work, I have no idea. The High Llamas - Literature is Fluff (Instrumental Version) - I like the first two-thirds! I can see the appeal of the finale, but to me what makes the song is--I guess it would be the bridge if there were words--when there's almost a complete break and the one note is accented twice by all the instruments. That's hot. Johnny Cash - Mister Garfield - How come when Cash quotes the lady in the song, he uses his really deep voice? Marianne Faithfull - Ballad of the Soldier's Wife - I think this song was playing in the background of the infamous scene with Charlotte Rampling in The Night Porter: Or at least, it should have been playing in the background. Astrud Gilberto - I'm Nothing Without You - This song sounds good after Marianne's ballad. The juxtaposition makes it sound almost as if Astrud is singing TO Marianne in response to her song. I'm clearly not focusing on the lyrics in most of these tracks. The Residents - Serenade for Missy - There needs to be a video for every Residents' song with just them walking around in their tuxedos and eyeball heads. The image just blends so well with the music. Bizarre yet somewhat formal too. I don't think any mix will be as memorable as this one. [Edited 1/31/10 17:16pm]
