I think he means "clean?" To me, Luther Vandross has one of the great voices, but it's not that pure. Or Louis Armstrong. That's how I interpret it, at least, I'm sure someone will say I'm completely wrong I was gonna post Luther he was always clear as a bell. He took Karen's Superstar and made that shit his own. In fact he did that with every song he covered.

Man, Lisa's version of Wildflower is pure bliss. Funny that you mention Lisa cuz this weekend while I was in Vegas I visited my favorite art gallery which features a lot of Ron Wood's work. One of his newest pieces is of Lisa Fischer. It's really a stunning piece too. Ron is very talented I have his rendition of Marvin Gaye.

I'm not really sure how any voice can be 'pure' , but if we're talkin 'clear' with some of the best, clearest phrasing around, I'm going for Nat 'King' Cole - a vocalist who made love to every word he ever sang. Also respect to Eva Cassidy and Shirley Bassey (now there's two ladies rarely mentioned in the same sentence ).
Beyond Nat, I'd agree with tA on Johnny Mathis, also Marvin Gaye (both Cole influencees incidentally), and in a way, as in 'purity of emotion', I must choose the great Roy Orbison, imo perhaps the greatest white singer yet recorded. for Roy's shades comin at ya .

Yeah, but now, Bobby's ex-roni probably isn't so tender anymore. I saw a picture of Bobby's dick on the internet a few years ago. Her pussy is probably stretched out like Bootsy's Rubber Band and just as funky. Andy is a four letter word.

When someone says "pure vocalist" to me, the first thing that comes to mind is how clear the voice is live compared to their records. That's why people like Luther, Seal, Stevie, MJ and yes, even James Brown come to mind. George Michael is another one. Many artists don't sound exactly like their records when they sing. James Brown's WORDS were garbled as hell but his voice...when he sang live, he sounded exactly like his records.
Its a rare quality - the gift of great tone.

Vocally speaking, Whitney Houston was a pure vocalist until she smoked up her vocals, cigarettes that is.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what OP means by pure.
When I think of a pure voice I think of one that is clear, non-gritty, free of rasp, straight-forward... Minnie Riperton Tamia
