Just went on a vinyl dig...my results

It's been a while since I went on a good vinyl dig around St. Clair Shores area but I had some favorable results. I found Car City Records. I think they have moved since the last time I was last there (which might have been around 1994). The stores I hit were Memories and Melodies, Record Time and Car City....All have pluses and minuses. I was about to say that Record Time was my favorite but the staff was really not any help at all! One girl kept telling to go to Amazon to pick up stuff...I thought Record Time was doing well enough...is she sending me a message to give up trying to find stuff at Record Time? They weren't carrying the Time/Shelia E. re-releases and considering her way of looking them up though Amazon or Allmusic or Wikipedia rather than seeing if she could order them, she was absolutely no help. Enough of all that....here is what I found.

Only 2 CDs and I only bought those because of the crazy low prices.

Dixie Chicks-Fly
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes-"Greatest Hits" (Collector's Edition....I saw this on vinyl at another store but was not digging the price...the CD was only $3 though!)

Vinyl...most of it $1!

Prince-Letitgo (saw it at one place and thought maybe...saw it for a dollar at another and was sold).
Marylin McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.-The Two of Us & Marilyn and Billy (the latter features "Shine On Silver Moon", which I could not figure out from internet searches what album that was on...)
5th Dimension-Greatest Hits (more McCoo and Davis magic)
Al Wilson-We Got A Feeling (just because I like him and didn't recognize any of the songs from the compilation I had of his)
Neil Young and Crazy Horse=Everybody Knows This is Nowhere (I was looking for his one and found it just standing in the front of a dollar bin but the sign said sales are final so I'm taking a chance here)
Patti Austin-Every Home Should Have One, The Real Me (couldn't find the self titled one, which bugs me since I wanted that one).
Issac Hayes-Don't Let Go, Hot Buttered Soul
Stevie Wonder-Inversions
Morris Day-Fishnet(love the song...hope the remixes hold up)
Joyce Simms-Come Into My Life (saw the CD and almost caved in...found the vinyl dirt cheap at another place....awesome!)
Spinners-Yesterday, Today and Tommorrow (no songs I recognize but if it's the Spinners, it's got to be good)
Abba-self titled (the Limo album fans call it...."SOS" and "Mamma Mia" along with a favorite album track, "Bang A Boomerang"....I'm trying to get their complete studio collection but caved in with this one)
Frida-self titled (Abba mania for only a buck and I was thinking this one was rare...I only hope I can find her "Shine" LP in stores one of these days)
Melissa Manchester-Greatest Hits
Fleetwood Mac-self titled (the 1975 album when Buckingham and Nicks joined...I know most of these tracks but on vinyl it's a special cheap treat)
Bob Dylan-Hard Rain (I was thinking his killer "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" was on here but nope...it appears to be his electric album)
Jody Watley-self titled
Ashford and Simpson-Solid (I also saw that new collection of theirs on CD cheap....should have just bought it!)
Rick James-Cold Blooded & Thrown Down (the guy commented on how it was a great record but in bad shape since it was from the dollar bin but I said I would take the chance since the CD now cost a fortune)
Donna Summer-Supernatural Love b/w Face the Music & Select Cuts from Once Upon A Time (I've heard great things about this promo album since it had different arrangements of the electronic songs which take up all of side one)
Aretha-Who's Zoomin' Who (the guy from M&M commented that her sectary comes into the store and buys stuff from Franklin...fine, I'm impressed!)

Among the things I did not find but was looking included the Beatles "Abbey Road" on LP (is it rare since it's the Beatles...I figured since they were so popular it would not be so expensive) and Paul McCartney's "Flowers In the Dirt" (the guy told me or came up with the theory that it could be a McCartney collectible since it was released when LPs were made in limited quantities..not sure if these people know what they are talking about or not). Also found a CD copy of Jocelyn Brown's "Somebody Else's Guy" which I wanted but hesitated since I figured it might be a fake...or maybe these Unidisc imports just look fake?

Comments? If you went on a vinyl dig this weekend, please post your results, too.

I saw your last thread and was going to post there but did not see it on the first page. You had some good finds, too. Do you think the Donna "Select Cuts" thing is rare? Not that I'm going to sell it (can't really with the cut) but it looks like I found a real goody at Car City. Even though it was a bit cramped, I'll definitely swing by there again soon.

Damn you. You've been going on a vinyl dig every weekend. I've been wanting to go on one for three weeks now but the only local used vinyl store is waaaay out in the country. I had my transmission fixed a few weeks ago and it still doesn't act perfect. If my car broke down way out there in the country, those rednecks that live in that area would chase my ass from one end of those fields to another. lol

Issac Hayes *drools*
Innervisions *cums*

about that Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes
not sure how big of a song
"Sandman" was for them

I don't know that I've bought a lot of vinyl on Ebay...not rare stuff. I look, but don't bid, which is smart since if the record stores have them, the prices are almost a lot lower (and no high shipping charge).

I could have sworn I saw a ton of copies of "Love Is In Control"...Memories and Melodies has a "Dance room", which two small rooms filled with 12" (mostly, there are some full albums in there....maybe the result of laziness. Even though both Prince and Madonna have different sections for their 12" but Donna is thrown into the classic dance S category. You got to go looking through there. I was looking for the "Dinner With Gerswhin" 12" (rare....seems like since I couldn't find a copy after looking all over at three different places that are pretty good about carrying a lot of dance and/or R&B on vinyl (that "Select Cuts" was under Donna's name in the R&B catogery....only found one Donna item in 12" single section.

Soulalive is always on those vinyl digs and often finding great stuff. The last time I was in the SCS area and on a vinyl dig was maybe 6 months ago! I know I went on one in Ann Arbor over the spring and found a whole lot of good stuff then.

"Fishnet" was only two bucks and I think I almost put it back since it did not have an original mix on there. I'll give it a chance for two bucks and can always sell it back.

I only know Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes from "The Love I Lost" and "Bad Luck", which are both great cuts. Don't think "Sandman" is on there. The CD has only 8 songs (it was the same exact release as the vinyl I found...maybe that is why it's a "Collector's Edition" since it's probably such an early release. I figure if i like it, I will upgrade (the same way I did with the Spinners..I've slowly been buying their albums on vinyl and have a 2 CD set of their hits).

I like Patti mostly after hearing two of her tracks that skew a bit dance pop (one of them was "Honey for the Bees", an Allison Moyet cover and I think the other was "Rhythm of the Street"). Sadly, I couldn't find the Cd with those cuts but will look again! I saw that album that you said you owned, but I wasn't sure if I would like it it at all since it was before that stuff I was looking for (and before her breakout single, "Baby, Come To Me").

BTW, I won't be able to listen to these for about a month since I don't have a record player in my parents house (and have to house sit for a damn long while). But I'm sure I'll remember to come back here with some commentary on most of the stuff I found, including Patti.

Next time you go,you should pick up the "Love Is In Control" 12"...it really is outstanding! So funky. It ends with Donna repeating "no,no,no,no" over and over...lol...on the B side, you get an instrumental version of the song with saxophonist Ernie Watts.A very jazzy take on the song.

Her 1981 album 'Every Home Should Have One' is a great place to start. It was produced by Quincy Jones so it has his signature sound.

Anyway, I bought it on a cassette maxi-single back in the day and have since recorded it onto CD-R. The extended version is great and check out the acapella or dub version. It's broken down with just the vocals, the synths, and some drums. I think it's called the "LaGlub" or LaClub" version. I don't know I'd have to look through my box of cassettes to get the official name of the version.
