The FOO FIGHTERS do a STUNNING remake.. This is one of the best remakes I have ever heard..
I dunno if you all remember the song "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty(if not,:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgbGaYTkkPU) but here's the Foo Fighters remake: http://www.youtube.com/wa...xdBNCovYBc I still love the orig better(gotta love that sax part!) but I think the Foo Fighters did an EXCELLENT remake! I like their cover of "Band On The Run", better. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

It was a nice cover, but there's something about the original that makes it unique and timeless. I think it was the first major hit that used an instrumental chorus to carry the song, and the sax solo really stood out from the rest of the song. Granted, the guitar licks on the Foo Fighters cover was faithful to the original, but it just sounds like another guitar solo.

Meh. Inferior drumming. Too much distortion in the rhythm guitar. Just shows that bands forgot how to write licks and hooks about 18 years ago.

I also think they stripped the subtlety from the song. I do think someone should remake it, but maybe not the Foo Fighters. SNOW PATROL should cover Baker Street. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I'm listening to Gerry Rafferty's original version right now. The Foo Fighters didn't even come close to matching Rafferty. Dance is right. The Foo Fighters should not do covers because it shows they are not very good musicians. Certainly not compared to the bands they're trying to cover.

The Foo Fighters need to take lessons on playing "Baker Street" from these guys:

I love the Foo Fighters....hate that cover though....bad idea for them to even try without taking it a little more serious. 'Love will be your Soldier' - Nikka Costa

This is one of my favorite covers of all time too.
Let the haters hate, but when you consider the original, the Foo's version just rocks. Later Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.

Somebody brought this cover version into the conversation a while back on here. The sax is kinda cheesy in the original, but given that the song is about a sax player who makes his money playing in subway stations, it fits the song. The guitar in the remake doesn't work for me.

All they did was try to play Prince's version note-for-note. What's the point of that? You bring up a good point - what is a cover? What should it be? I've thought about it and it's hard to come up with good covers. Most are like the "Darling Nikki" type - simply a copy. Others are like "Baker Street" - failed attempts at living up the greatness of the original. Either because of a bad interpretation, poor musicianship, or both. In any case, there's almost nowhere to go with a cover except down. I think the best place for covers is for brand-new artists trying to get attention. Cover an innocuous song - like Tiffany did with Tommy James' "I Think We're Alone Now". Or, if you are a fantastic vocalist, you can attempt a cover as a way of showing off your voice. And finally, covers are cool in concert. There, it's more like an attempt to keep a party going than anything else. The only good covers that come to my mind are Prince's - he did Joan Osborne's "One of Us" right, and the version of "Guitar" that he released could arguably be called a cover version of his own song.

The Foo Fighters should not do covers because it shows they are not very good musicians. Certainly not compared to the bands they're trying to cover. Rick Springfield nailed it on his covers album back in 2005 "the day after yesterday". He kept all the things needed and didnt alter a thing, some times it helps when the person doing the cover actual was a recording artist when it came out, the Foo Fighters, though a pretty good band, were barely born. I liked it
but it´s in no way stunning Their "band on the run" is good too. Both contemporary and mainstream in sound, but lack that creative dynamic energy that the originals have. small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

I love it when bands totally change songs when they cover them, good examples would have to be "Seven Nation Army" covered by The Flaming Lips, even the Scissor Sisters cover of "Comfortably Numb" is great Receiving transmission from David Bowie's nipple antenna.
