For me it seemed like Johnny was out of place in New Edition. He had the more mature voice compared to Ralph Tresvant who sounded like a little school girl compared to Johnny's voice. Johnny did bring them to new heights, but they kept Ralph on lead, which was always puzzling to me. Maybe because Ralph's voice could attract the teeny boppers, while Johnny's voice was hard to market...especially in a boy band group. "Boys to Men" on the Hearbreak album is one of their strongest tracks.

Never understood their keeping Johnny in the background esp.in all the pics. Maybe it was just a "looks" thing, but his voice was many levels above the other NE members even Ricky's. Ralph to me was never a good singer after puberty. Morris Star signed Ralph on simply because he wanted that Jackson 5 sound.

They don't even belong in the same sentence with the temps more or less
the same stage. The only album i could tolerate to listen to now from
New Edition is the N.E Heartbrek album.

Well, musically they're not very talented. Singing is okay, looks are average and they did not wwrite or produce their stuff.

They did play instuments Ricky Keyboards and Ralph Drums, Bobby also plays keyboard..there is a youtube video of them playing Candy Girl.

Ricky & Ralph also wrote "Im leaving you Again" which was sampled by Bow Wow and Ciara for "Like You"

They wrote "Kinda Girls We Like"
"School"
"Superlady"
"Competition"
"Thats The Way Were Livin"
and co wrote other most songs on their last 2 albums.

It's interesting of all of the groups mentioned, The O'Jays and The Isley Brothers have outlasted them all. I think the Dells are still around, but I know that the lead singer is having health issues.
