For a second time - nobody in here referred to Ludacris as a gangsta rapper.

People have been referring to him as a thug (as well as his music...)...

And let's be real...the sentiment on this site is to lump all rappers in the same box...I dig it if folks don't like hip hop...Whatever floats people's boat...But shitting on the work of an artist that you've probably just heard of only yesterday is lame...

I'm not even talking about folks' feelings about rap as a genre. As a rule, I stay out of that argument, becuase it goes nowhere. lol I'm just saying that nobody in here has referred to him as a thug or a gangsta rapper...not once.

No, he isn't. He's insinuating that they already have and will continue to do so.

Well, I have a little prediction of my own. I predict that anyone who dares criticize The Anointed One between now and November - on any front, no matter how legitimate, no matter how issues based - will be accused of racism. It's already happening.

Anyone who crticized The Incumbent between 9.12.01 and 2006 was accused of being unpatriotic and treasonous. What you're talking about now, Genesia, is a walk in the park compared to Obamamania. After all, Obama's flacks never told people to "watch what they say."

But I digress.

Anyone who believes that the GOP, through McCain, Bush, or anyone else, will not attempt to inject racial overtones into this campaign is sleepwalking through history.

What Obama said was a preemptive strike, to let his opponents know he'll not be Swift Boated on the basis of his race. And even if McCain had not done so until now, it puts him on the defensive and on notice that he's dealing with a candidate who will fight him back and has all the cash in the world to do so.

Luda didn't do Candidate Obama any favors, regardless of his intentions.

This is bullshit. Obama called out Bush and McCain specifically, even though neither of them has made any appeal to - or in fact any mention of - race. As a matter of fact, McCain made a special point during the primary season to warn non-campaign Republicans away from these kinds of tactics. (Remember the North Carolina ad?)

With his "pre-emptive strike," Obama raised the issue himself and made a backhanded accusation that has absolutely no basis in reality. What he is really trying to do is stifle any criticism of himself or his campaign.

The McCain ad that prompted this says nothing about race. Rather, it struck at what should be a central question in this race: Obama's preparedness to lead. This guy is an empty suit. (It's an expensive suit - but empty nonetheless.) Not only has he no relevant experience, he actually takes credit for the leadership and legislation of other people. (Most recent example: When in Europe, he touted himself as the head of the Senate Banking committee. He isn't even on that committee.)

If people make an issue of his race, Obama has every right to take umbrage and cry foul. But his opponent hasn't done that. Which is why this whole thing has backfired and the race is now a dead heat. People are getting wise.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

U said "no one said he was a thug"...I just pointed out to you that someone did...And we can chill with the semantics...This cloak and dagger shit going on throughout with code words tells me a lot about some of the folks on this site as well...

I'm cool with Vain...He's one of my favorite posters on the Org...I don't have to ask him to clarify anything...I know what he meant, because he's been going at hip hop for a long time...And at times he's right in his criticism...Other times he sounds like Bill OReilly...

Bottom line: it is what it is...

Wh is the assumption that because we don't like what Luda said, we don't know hip hop? Get the fuck outta here with that. If you are a purist, a hip hop head, there is no fucking way you can take Luda and call him the same thing as Chuck D.

I pretty much agree with you and I don't even like McCain. Obama pulled the race card and it's unfortunate that he did so.

Nah...nothing like that...In fact, I could care less if folks like Luda..

I just have a problem with folks criticizing his music (or labeling him) without ever hearing it first...That's all...

And for the record, most "hip hop" heads know that Ludacris is a highly underrated lyricist...He's even called the Redman of the south by a lot of "hip hop" heads...But that's another thread...

Well, when Bill O'Riley starts having two dicks at one time, feel free to make the comparison. I mean, how do you think I got my beautiful twins. One child for each of the men I had that night.

And as for Bill O'Riley, that old fart is too old to cut my mustard. However, I will let him lick the jar.

. . . not to mention the Tennessee GOP ads. I understand the context just fine. I haven't heard Bush or McCain make any references to Obama's race. But comparatively speaking, Bush's record was as thin as Obama's when he decided to run for president. But he was the odds-on favorite the minute he got in the race. Many of the people decrying Obama's inexperience were praising Bush at the time. Garden variety political hypocrisy? Perhaps. But the GOP's use of coded racial lingo in political campaigns has been masterful for the last 40 plus years, and many times, it's done by surrogates.

Plus, he may have been addressing clandestine racial attacks on Obama from the Bush/McCain camps that can often occur on the ground (see Rove's destruction of McCain in South Carolina, 2000).

With his "pre-emptive strike," Obama raised the issue himself and made a backhanded accusation that has absolutely no basis in reality. What he is really trying to do is stifle any criticism of himself or his campaign.

I don't see it that way. What he's doing is trying to neutralize the use of race by the GOP, which has a long history of race-baiting tactics in presidential elections, in this campaign. He's not trying to stifle any dissent by use of the R word.

Any implication that he's quick to play the race card is unfounded. He didn't even want to mention race, to the point where blacks were and are wary of him, When Sen. Clinton criticized him or his campaign, he often hit back without reference to race. He even acknowledged that his relationship with Rev. Wright was a legitimate issue to address and explore, and dealt with it accordingly. He doesn't use race as his get-out-of-jail-free card.

I know what the McCain ad said. But remember also that Obama listed a number of factors yesterday OTHER THAN RACE which Bush and McCain will hit on and have hit on.

If people make an issue of his race, Obama has every right to take umbrage and cry foul. But his opponent hasn't done that. Which is why this whole thing has backfired and the race is now a dead heat. People are getting wise.

Well, in the short term, I think you might be right. But it could be Obama that won in the long term. By calling out his opponent(s) for using race tactics before they directly engage in them (assuming they have not already), it puts them in an awkward position. They may have the high ground now, because they made no mention of race, but if they do, then Obama will prove to be right. If they do not, his opponents keep the high ground on this issue, but race, which is likely the only reason Obama could lose this election, is off the table. Some play checkers, others play chess.

Obama may be taking a short-term hit for a long-term strategic advantage. You make good points, based on what I've seen, McCain hasn't played the race card. But ask Harold Ford, Jr. what the GOP will do down the stretch to a viable black candidate trying to break the color barrier. Obama wants to avoid that, and he has reason to believe the GOP will try it later, if they haven't tried it already. That's all I'm saying.
