Mr. Joe Sample Any one familiar with this outstanding Creole Brother from my hometown of Houston, Texas? Joe Sample was one of the founders ot The Crusaders but since I say around the late 70's became a incredible solo jazz artist.
Albums such as SpellBound Ashes to Ashes Joe Sample and the Soul Committee To name a few really showed this Brother's lyrical, introspective, and highly rhythmic compositional approach which I think you hear in much of "contemporary jazz" today Joe has some incredible songs with Lalah Hathaway who is the daughter of the late great Donny Hathaway also check out some of the great tunes performed with Randy Crawford and Al Jarreau. This music is rooted deep in the heart of SouthEast Texas. Man I am talking about a serious melting pot of people, food and music which can only be described as the sweet soul fo the South "I grew up in a time and place where segregation was an acceptable way of life, and for me the piano was the only place I could run for an act of healing. I still feel that expressing myself this way is my great sanctuary. I would like my legacy to be not only that I reflected the times in which I lived, but also that my music had the power to help heal people's pain the way it has healed mine" Mr. Joe Sample "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud!!!" - Brother James Brown
"Make my funk the P-FUNK...I want my funk uncut...." Brother George Clinton

Joe Sample's the bomb, no question. The man flows like melting butter.
(I know they're often, probably unfairly, compared, but) I dig Bob James' gift for structure better. Get me someone with James' structure & Sample's flow, and I'd be a happy man.
