Marcus Miller's manager, Bibi Green, confirmed it at MarcusMiller.com, so I am afraid it is true, sadly.

I'm afraid to say it's true. I luv me some Hiram. What a GREAT player. He was overweight and had a serious substance abuse problem. I'm sure it was a heart attack or something of a coronary nature.
You'll be missed!! (If you don't know about Hiram, go to youtube and pick one). Tha man can play! [Edited 7/26/08 11:22am]

TOO bad! I remember him mostly from "Sunday Night" or "Night Music" with David Sanborn (one of the best shows EVER on TV)!! RIP. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

Damn. He was a great player. I knew his weight had gone up but I heard he kicked the junk a long time ago. Another great musician gone. R.I.P.

R U SERIOUS I saw him in '06 with Will Lee from The David Letterman Show for the Jaco Pastorius Big Band Tribute. A TRUE talent. I'll be listening to "Promise Me the Moon" the title track from David Sanborn's 1977 release. Hiram sang lead on it. Beautiful song. R.I.P

This is sad. Aside from being a great guitarist, he used to do some funny skits on early Letterman shows. NBC's Night Music was the best, too!

I had a great album of him playing with Jaco and Kenwood Dennard in NYC and they were SMOKIN! He was playing entire Weather Report arrangements on the guitar. It was incredible! RIP
