Not at all. And where's the "childish name calling"? Oh, i get it. Ya'll don't like being called "kool-aid kids". Ah, well. But it's the truth.

There is no "god of music". It's not Marvin, and it certainly ain't Prince.

And once again, i come here because i CAN. Been here longer than most of ya'll and will be there long after. I come here, because i've forgotten more about P than some of you know about him, and because i like SOME of the people that frequent this place, and once in a great while there's a good thread on here.

Most of the time, i marvel at the pedestal that P's been placed on by some of you, and i take my shots when i can at TRYING to get some of you to face REALITY.

So can we stop with the "why do you come here?" question just because i don't think P is the music messiah? He's talented for sure. But his albums of late have been ass, all of his movies have been ass (except SOTT), and every song he's done aren't all masterpieces. Period.

you've said more than "koolaid kids" in this thread and even another poster asked you why you were being so nasty so its not just me. names don't bother me as much i just think its childish.

i don't ask "why you come here" because you don't think he's a music messiah. I ask because you yourself said you get pissed and i think its retarded to continuously visit a Prince fansite and get upset when people post favorable comments about Prince. Then get bent out of shape when everyone does not follow your OPINION. People here and offline view Prince as their favorite musician, there is nothing you're going to do to change that, and you should not care, big deal.

when you evoke such emotion that to me is a sign of jealousy, otherwise you would just let your OPINION be heard and not give a shit.

I got a question. When are y'all going to start talking about D'Angelo on this thread again? I thought that's who this thread was about, not Marvin Gaye or Prince.

I will; I remember a few years ago when D'angelo was talking shit about Prince putting out bad albums, not trying or whatever, and met the guy and said he felt like taking a shower afterwards. Way to talk about your hero D. Anyway, I didn't say much then but I just thought "what nerve, let's see where he is in a few years" and look at him. hahahah.

Yeah, I remember him knocking P for putting out bad joints...Wasn't hip to the part of him meeting P and then he felt like taking a shower afterwards...What kind of way out shit was that supposed to be? You're going to copy a cat to DEATH like he did on Untitled but then say something like that?

something to be said for longevity. And it never looks good for an up and comer to be that disrespectful and looks much worse when they invalidate themselves. I recall when Arsenio Hall was hot, he said Smokey Robinson would not come on his show because "it might make Johnny mad!"(he said this in an impression of a Roots slave) Looks cocky and foolish, at least he actually took off his shoe and put it in his mouth when smokey actually did make his show. Arsenio is now a washed up comedian and Smokey is still a legend.

D'angelo was quoted saying that in Possessed I think, so who knows how true it was. I guess Prince was being condescending which is easy to believe, and telling D'angelo about his music. Still, as a musician myself, if Prince said something to me I wouldn't be insulted by it and would give it great credence. Egos, people don't know how to listen anymore and learn without taking things so personal.

Here we go now it has gone from Prince not crediting people who helped (which I don't doubt but that was their stupidity) to he did not really write much at all.
Nevermind that Albert Magoli said P had a 100 songs for Purple Rain and keep writing while they were filming sometimes coming up with stuff as he rewrote the script. Nevermind the musicians and studio engineers who discuss P comments about what the songs were about ( some are just to damm personal and weird to have involvement from others) and were around when he wrote them.

I don't doubt P had help and don't doubt he has stockpiled enough music that he probaly has not written anything new in years but the idea that he has a secret group that helped him the whole of his carreer is ridculous and even if he did he was still more productive than Marvin who had the whole Motown song writing machine and probaly the mob behind him.

It's all perception.
If you want to argue that Marvin didn't really "write" his songs because he had "help", then i'm arguing so did Prince.

AND (and i really wish you kool-aid kids would deal with reality ONCE in awhile) this MYTH of how many "songs" are in the vault is just that. I'm sure that P had "100 songs" for Purple Rain, and i'd guess that 90% of those had THE SAME DAMN MELODY. I'm sorry. But having been a fan of P since the beginning, and having heard a TON of the bootleg stuff that's out there, i don't think there's tons of masterpieces sitting in that "vault". I'd wager a large majority of it is crap that he didn't want out there, because it's simply that. CRAP. When he's doing a Morris impression over a drum loop, i'm sorry that's not a fucking SONG, that's an UNFINISHED IDEA.

Prince is not the fucking GOD OF MUSIC, and i wish ya'll would stop acting like he is.

-----
.I never said P was the God of music but he was a hell a lot more productive and influential than Marvin Gaye. I have been a fan from the beginning, P’s worst melodies were better than all of the crap that was out back then, and he is still better than 80% of the shit you are hearing on the radio today.

You can hear P's influence on some of the better musicians and groups out today and I am beginning to think you like many haters are a little jealous of P's success and fan base. Failing to realize that people are fans because the really like the music and enjoy his concerts not because he has cast a magic spell over anyone.

since much more from me will be perceived as "jealousy of P's awesome talent", i'll just say this. been working in the music business for 20 years. i hear Marvin's influence more usually than i hear P's.

again, if some of you really want to look at the world through purple coloured glasses, that's fine. P's had a good career for sure. but again, his most prolific days are WAY behind him, and his concerts these days are more about people getting their nostalgia on, than being treated to a great concert. just because blind idol worship prevents some of you from seeing it, doesn't mean it's not the case.

I agree,"Come Get To This" is a better song than "Sexual Healing" nod nod and "You Sure Love To Ball" is the ultimate bedroom ballad of all time.It doesn't really matter to me what the majority thinks,I think those songs capture Marvin at his best.

no one is disputing that Prince's earlier work is better. Like most artist of the 80's or anyone who can claim 30 years in the business, that is mostly the case. I'm sure there are examples of musicians who have remained consistent, Prince not being one of them. However, we all have different taste some of us appeciate and enjoy some of his current work, even though they do not compare to his earlier work. Just because you think everything Prince has done is shit, which you have every right to, does not mean we all have to blindly following your opinion, if we happen to enjoy some of his stuff. Just because you think 20,000 people only want a nostalga act, does not mean that some really do enjoy Prince as a live performer.

But if you feel that is considered blind idol worship, then i'll say that your jealousy of prince prevents you from accepting other people's opinion or personal taste.

The argument was that "Come Get To This", despite your attempts to claim otherwise, is not as well known as Marvin's other songs. And why are you bringing up The Beatles, Prince and MJ when I already said it's only in MARVIN'S CASE that his best known stuff ranks as some of his best work? Talk about moving the goalposts. There are certainly lesser known tracks of his that are fantastic too, but the problem is those ones were mostly co-written too.

The list of solo Marvin compositions you typed up earlier proved my point. I don't think many people would say a song like "Praise" can hold a candle to "Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)". I don't think you could seriously say "Got To Give It Up" is in the same league as "Let's Get It On". I don't think you could say "Heavy Love Affair" is in the same galaxy as "What's Going On". And I'm sorry, but imo "You Sure Love To Ball" does not compare to "Sexual Healing" or "Please Stay (Don't Go Away)".

I'm a big Marvin fan, but unlike some others, I don't let sentimentality cloud my judgement. Marvin was great, but if you want to rank songwriters then Bob Marley, Prince, Stevie Wonder and literally a hundred other writers would all have to go above him. As someone else said, Marvin was an underachiever. Only a raving sentimentalist would argue with that. He was jealous of Stevie for a reason. wink

my only response, because i'm tired of going back and forth with this is i bet if you talked to the majority of Prince's ex-bandmates, MOST of them would tell you that they ghost wrote a ton of songs over the years.

just because P made everyone sign agreements before even joining the band, basically forcing them to not only give up all of their songwriting credits but to also not be able to talk about him in the press afterwards, i don't think you can assume that Prince wrote most of his hits by himself. That's what he WANTS YOU TO THINK. that's different.

eek Okay, up until now I just thought you were someone who I frequently disagreed with. But right now I'm starting to suspect you might be a full blown fruitcake. WTF?! Prince was writing great songs from the late '70s to well into the mid '90s. Considering he changed his band members every two or three years, that's an awful lot of closet songwriting geniuses he managed to uncover who never wrote anything before or afterwards. Tell me, who wrote "Thieves In The Temple", Rosie Gaines? What about "Anna Stesia"? Dr. Fink? And I guess Dez Dickerson was the brains behind "Lady Cab Driver", huh? Don't even tell me about "When Doves Cry". I can't stand to have my illusions shattered anymore.

It's enough that you've already informed us Prince is an alien. Now it turns out he's a voodoo priest who can take random musicians, turn them into songwriting machines, make them surrender all their copyrights, then turn them back into random musicians before he fires them. Damn, the FBI really should hire this guy. With those supernatural powers he could overthrow Al Qaeda in just a week or two.

Well this statement proves you do not know what you are talking about and maybe you need to get out of the music business since you don’t know a great performer when you see one in industry filled with people who can’t sell out even the smallest venue because they cannot cut it live at all.

Keep drinking those big bottles of haterade.

eek Okay, up until now I just thought you were someone who I frequently disagreed with.

Yes, P should use his supernatural powers to help our national defense (LOL)

I've heard all of those songs several times and I still can't hum a single one of them.

lol

Then you're tone deaf mate. A statue could hum those.

It's precisely because my ear for melody is so good that I state my case with such confidence. Songs like "Anger" have a certain formlessness to the melodies that makes it hard for non devotees to really love them in the way anyone can love a song like "Let's Get It On". Now, I have to say that songs don't have to have stand out melodies in order to work. If the grooves or the riffs are strong enough, then a singer sometimes doesn't have to do much more than just ride it well, and it can still be great, particularly if they've got a great voice or potent lyrics. I guess if you wanted, you could argue that the songs on Here, My Dear achieve that kind of alchemy. I would strongly disagree, but you could argue it. See, I'm being generous now. smile

You either didn't read Divided Soul (where the quote comes from) or else you know nothing about Marvin. Marvin was one of the most self aware and self critical pop stars EVER. He admitted to all kind of things that you would never expect. When Nelson George put it to him that Midnight Love was a sell out Marvin candidly said he agreed. When talking to David Ritz he confessed everything from his sexual insecurities to his petty jealousies and fears. I don't think anyone who's read Divided Soul would think Marvin was joking.

Divided Soul is an amazing book (which came about because Marvin loved David Ritz's impassioned defence of Here, My Dear in a letter to Rolling Stone).

Marvin was big on self-loathing at the best of times. He was pretty much at his absolute lowest ebb when he sat down with Ritz to do the book. He was in Ostend - no money, no career, no family, no country, no wife, basically living on the charity of a Belgian promoter. Combine the two and you'd get the mindset that would dismiss his crowning achievement and himself as a fraud.

You also failed to go into the context of the quote. Marvin saw himself as a singer first and foremost. He wanted to be the black Sinatra, yet, he felt he'd never achieve this aim because he was viewed as a sex symbol (although that's hardly surprising, when you make an album called Let's Get It On - a bit like D'Angelo hating women screaming at him to get his clothes off after he'd done a video stark bollock naked ... I mean - DUH!). A self-loathing self-defeatist all the way.

Bullshit. I explained the context quite clearly. He was being asked about making What's Going On. It had nothing to do with the "black Sinatra" thing. What's Going On is seen by the VAST MAJORITY of people as his best album and Marvin knew something that his devotees seemingly don't. That is that, like most of his work, it was an equal partnership with many, many contributors. He understood the tendency of the public to give all the credit to the guy who's face happens to be on the cover. In that sense he may have felt slightly fraudulent. Granted, that's a strong word that personally I would reserve more for Alicia Keys or Janet Wackson than for Marvin, but nonetheless, that's the context of the quote.

Marvin's tone throughout the interviews was one of UTMOST CANDOR. When he bragged (about his voice or looks for instance) he was mostly just telling the truth. When he put himself down (about his dancing ability or laziness for instance) he was again just telling the truth.

my only response, because i'm tired of going back and forth with this is i bet if you talked to the majority of Prince's ex-bandmates, MOST of them would tell you that they ghost wrote a ton of songs over the years.

Yeah, we can just wrap this up now. We're never going to agree. It's nice that you have an opinion; it's even better if you realize that's exactly what it is.

"Come Get to This" is a better song than "Sexual Healing" IMO. Period. I get that you disagree, I just don't care.

Wow.
I've done it once again.
I guess i should be proud of myself?

Because here we are yet again, on yet another thread where the majority of what i've written has been either completely blown way out of proportion or just dismissed as flat out hatred for P.

I've said it before, i'll say it again. I'm a Prince fan. Have been for most of my life. But just because i don't think he invented music, or think that he was sent here by the almighty to teach us what music is supposed to sound like or any of the other ridiculous notions i glean from some of ya'll, doesn't mean i hate the man.

I may not like a lot of what he's done lately, musically or as far as his little crusade against the internet, but i'm more of a fan than i am "a hater".

but compared to a LOT of ya'll? I guess i am a "hater".
and i can sleep at night knowing that.
we'll never agree on the Prince vs. Marvin topic, obviously.
so NEXT.

Maybe he was lazy, i never thought his dancing was half bad, but then i am no authority on that. He had low self esteem suffered from depression it's obvious and even with his looks and talent he was shy and insecure. But I think his many statements come out of just being too damned hard on himself. I don't think you can be as good as he was without some real obsessive work involved. There is a clip on You Tube of him playing piano, a rare treat, and the man could play his ass off and obviously spent countless hours sitting in front of a piano. I play piano, I work my ass off and am talented and I can't play anywhere near that good, can't help but think he must have woodshedded at some point. I personally do not believe his statements.

I did read the book, more than once. It was one of the main reasons I became such a Marvin fan, I could relate to him on so many levels. It was one of the most painful books i've ever read. Marvin did have ambivalence, that is why the book was called divided soul. Him saying he wasn't a great artist was like saying he felt "ridiculous" being a sex symbol. He wouldn't have done it if he didn't really want to and if he didn't have what it took. He did want to be the black sinatra and felt demeaned maybe, but he also was a freak. I'm sure he loved all the attention, the women. And also, even if he did believe he was a fraud, that's not really for him to say. That question belongs to his audience and we generally say he was a great artist, in my mind, one of the very best of the last 50 years. They don't make them like that anymore. His singing alone was probably some of the best ever, he along with Billy Holiday and a few others was a master of using his voice to express and also use it like a jazz instrument. Then, his versatility in his voice alone was just plain phenomenal. Prince became a great singer through hard work, Marvin was gifted.

I'm glad you said that. David Ritz's book is responsible for much of the revisionism surrounding Marvin's less successful albums. It's no coincidence so many here have praised that book just as much as they've praised Marvin. The book makes folks fascinated with him so they then get fascinated with his more personal material.

You are the first person to openly admit (though you perhaps didn't realise you were doing it) how the book influenced your judgement of Marvin's music. I'm sure if you asked most people in this thread they would say they judged his music purely on it's own without any outside influence, but they'd be kidding themselves. At the time of Here My Dear's release people didn't have all that personal knowledge of Marvin's troubles so they just judged it for what it was (which is the way all albums should be judged) and they concluded it was self indulgent (though it had a nice sound). IMO they got it right. The album has interest if you're interested in Marvin personally, but it's a hard album to enjoy otherwise. Still, it's much better than I Want You which is well produced, well arranged and utterly boring. It was also slammed at the time. Quite rightly.

Yeah, Marvin was a great pianist, but he did most of that work when he was a kid. He was raised in a strict, religious household and not allowed to play with other kids. Since he was in a musical environment with nothing else to distract him (they didn't even have TV in those days) he obviously practised piano and drums a lot. But he'd mastered that by the time he was in his mid teens. It was in his adult years the sloth kicked in. And it's not just Marvin who said he was lazy. It's almost everyone who knew him.
