I hope this isn't posted already but SPIN has a very interesting "What Happened" article on D'Angelo. Among other things (a friends suicide) it appears D got constantly heckled by horny broads during his brilliant tour back in the early 00's to take off his clothing during EVERY song! This angered and depressed him apparantly. He was also hampered by credibility issues and apparantly CAVED under the pressure of being the "savior" of soul.

It seems he's gotten his health back together and has a great batch of new material ALMOST ready, but the article explains a lot.

What I learned? Again, NEVER take yourself TOO seriously!

Seriously. What an idiot. lol Not for the suicide obviously but cry everyone a river that you're talented as hell and broads wanted you rolleyes

It's interesting. Working at EMI i know we waited and waited and waited for a new album, and then i ran into Alan Leeds at a conference and asked him about D and that was pretty much the story he told me. D really wasn't comfortable at all with the imagery of the "Untitled" video and was really really bothered by fans not even wanting to hear the music and just screaming for him to take his clothes off.

So almost Marvin Gaye like, he decided to grow a beard, gain some weight and not give a fuck.

I'm glad he's dealing with his issues and is going to FINALLY release some new music! We need it!

What a ridiculous assumption! You think people bought concert tickets because they only wanted to see his body? Hello, they bought them cuz they wanted to hear him sing! boxing

I love when people who don't do music, or aren't artists love to criticize how every other artist should act.

Since I have no strong feelings one way or the other on D'Angelo I don't have a foot in this argument, but I'm curious about the above comment. What makes one group's criticism more valid than another?

People don't go to concerts to hear the artist, they buy them so they can tell their friends they were there. How many times have you gone to a show and some bitch is on her phone yakking for most of the night? lol

It's the armchair psychologist trip. It's someone who has no idea telling someone else how to do their job. I'm sure that you'd be pissed off if D'Angelo came to your job and started telling YOU what to do and how to do it. lol Just because someone buys a record doesn't mean they really understand the person making it. shrug

OK, you know what????..... lol You're right redface When I went to see the Brand New Heavies last year, I am practically self flagilating because this was singularly the most hardcore spiritual thing for me and these assholes next to me were just talking through the whole thing.

Right On! I gotta agree with you on this. The issue is you gotta do your thing and understand everybody is not always gonna shower praise on you every album. If you're an artist, you gotta understand that's the nature of art and keep pushing.

according to my brother it was common knowledge in the okayplayer forums that part of D's meltdown was due to self image. questlove claims he would do push ups before shows and would ask if he still looked as good as the untitled video.

They say that the women who attended the shows would scream "take it off" but I guess that would be expected. He had the nerve to let a camera crew shoot him ass naked but freaked out because of the female fan reaction. lol

The human psyche is a fragile thing and each person varies from person to person, obviously their were already some self esteem issues already going on with this cat, and fame just brought it all out to the forefront.

When its all said and done his personal issues aside, I wouldn't mind hearing some new tracks, if and when they finally drop.

Yeah, I agree with all of that. I'm looking forward to hearing new music from him though (whenever it's coming out). I still listen to Brown Sugar and Voodoo on a regular basis, so I'm interested in hearing what he comes up with now.

I agree with those who said part of the problem Maxwell, D'Angelo, and Lauryn Hill ran into was trying to compare themselves to legends before they really had the credentials to back it up.

D'Angelo may have been pushed into that "Untitled" image but he certainly seemed to be loving it until that tour started.

Hill was all good with the comparisons to Roberta Flack and Nina Simone until it was proven that she needed help with her compositions.

Maxwell marketed himself in the mold of sensual Marvin and seems to be stuck there.

That's why the fans nor the artist should buy into the HYPE of it all. U have 2 EARN certain things in this world.

i don't really understand the schizo stance to fame and a second or third

if they're so uncomfortable with the fame why do they care to make a new
album that's so damn good they can't get it together for 10 years?

just release a nice new disc of music and keep a low profile. make those
rabid followers take a step back and just don't tour.

then go back to the studio and do whatever feels good. don't tour untill
you feel good and ready.

there are ways to stay in the spotlight without riding the tidal wave of
glittery fame.

Why not? Because: Excuses are the tools of the incompetent and with them we build the monuments of nothing.

If he didn't like women oogling over him, why didn't he just stay fat or unfit and continue to make music? To hell with them. If he's got music, he's got music. Put it out. Don't do videos. Better yet, don't do videos half-naked or don't appear in them like George Michael did.

As for Sade, she had already done about three or four albums before she started taking big breaks in between. Enough to firmly establish herself on the scene and drop a Best of disc to pass the time.

Dance

The neosoul marketing kit is full of BS like this "oh so and so is a tortured artist and blah blah blah." This is one of the things they'll feed people until the market tests show that people will eat up their ghost hype and nonmusic again.

The neosoul douche era/trend was booming for a few years, but then people got bored with that trend while others saw through it. It also required more time, more marketing money, and more risk to create neosoul nonmusic and create its ghost popularity.

During this break they've tossed these douches into films and are hoping they can continue their roles as corporate bots that way.

The real story is that DAngelho is enjoying the scrap of money he's been able to make and has decided that he doesn't want to be in a film or sing hooks for shit hoppers right now. He's somewhere snorting his money and eating his weight in food and probably banging an Eddie Murphy girl.

When 'Miseducation' was released,Lauryn was listed as the album's producer and she was given credit for producing it herself. Some other producers sued her, claiming they actually did most of the work. They apparently won the case.

It's the armchair psychologist trip. It's someone who has no idea telling someone else how to do their job. I'm sure that you'd be pissed off if D'Angelo came to your job and started telling YOU what to do and how to do it. lol Just because someone buys a record doesn't mean they really understand the person making it. shrug

But he'd have to spend some time at my job, learn what I do, how I do it, who I report to in order to know what to do. I'll I gotta do is put on his record, and if it sounds whack, I'd say (to the record), "Man, this is whack." I'm not actually telling him anything. I just won't be giving him any of my money.

You don't have to be a musician to know good or bad music. shrug

But I'm just speaking generally and sort of playing devil's advocate because I don't agree with the logic as it applies to anyone (not just D'Angelo).

Van Hunt is very much guilty of this shit. I just want to say to him "Well write some fucking songs!".

Re D'Angelo, I do think he's special. "Voodoo"'s a weird album...not much in the way of "songs", but man, those grooves. I'll always be interested to hear what he comes up with.

"D'angelo may have been pushed into that 'Untitled' image but he certianly seemed to be loving until that tour started".

Co-sign. D is his own man and he made his own desicions. Evey picture I saw of him back then was either shirtless or more. Nothing wrong with being healty or looking good, but he created his own "sex messiah" image.

Jimi and Marvin were able to walk away from that and still create music for people to LISTEN to. And to be honest I never cared much for Lauryn Hill. She was brainwashed by her husband and believed her own hype. Wyclef said her ego became real huge during that time.

Yeah, I used to have that opinion myself too.

BUT THEN AGAIN....

Damn near all of them(minus D) recorded a WHOLE album, hell L-Boogie recorded a double CD-set album called "Kalumba Phase" but both albums were rejected; L-Boogie was rejected because her new album was more political/social(and the label feared it might offend alot of people, like one of the songs offended the Pope) and more rock-oriented, Maxwell focused on the homosexuality thing(which the label feared it might kill his female fanbase).

So, I think its unfair that we lay the WHOLE blame on them and forget about the label who rejected their effort in the beginning for catering to the commercial needs.

Stevie/James/Prince's time was different,,,,their label gave them COMPLETE creative control and never 2nd guessed their choices,,,,like nowadays.
