Never listened to INXS. Suddenly feeling the urge.

Where to begin?

No disrespect to the band, but so many of their songs sounded the same to me. Particularly the guitar parts.

Not too familiar with the band though. Somebody prove me wrong! Tell me that their stuff has a lot of range.

The Swing was one of my favorite albums as a kid.

If your gonna start, i suggest go with "Shoobo Shoobah" and "the swing" to start with the early days, these two albums are their best from the 80's. I wouldnt get KICK because im sure you have heard most of those songs as singles, and its not a good record to form an opinion around. For their 90's records go with "Welcome Wherever You Are" and "Elegantly Wasted" which was there final record with Michael. If you get these 4 then go with "Kick" but also go for "Full Moon Dirty Hearts" which was an off-the-Wall album, that they recorded in a few weeks, its was their "Chaos and Disorder" some people love it and some hate it, I personally think its one of their best.

Listen Like Thieves is a great album too. 'What You Need' is a great funk/rock tune. Prince covered it last summer at the O2

For someone just starting out getting into INXS I'd go with:
Shine Like It Does - The Anthology (1979-1997)

This is the best collection of INXS content, only missing a few songs IMO,
and is packaged very nicely. The content is all the INXS hits you would expect:
A lot of earlier hits, "What You Need," "Listen Like Thieves" and "Don't Change." (Plus many many more.) Then it has all the big charted hits from,
Kick and X. It also has a lot of the songs that were simply beautiful later
on in their career. Songs like "Beautiful Girl" and "The Gift" make the second half of the collection AMAZING. The quality on these versions was remastered
and sounds great. As for the packaging, it has Andrew Farriss sharing his personal memories of each song, from how Michael wrote the lyrics, to just great timeless stories. Combined with a beautiful package, awesome photos of the guys,
and the bands dedication to Michael, and the fans. It all comes together and makes this project feel more like a book, than a collection of beautiful music.


If you insist on starting with a "real" album: go with:
Kick

It is the most commercial thing they did, and not by far the greatest. But, to a newbie it is a fair amount of radio hits "New Sensation," "Need You Tonight," "Never Tear Us Apart," and "Devil Inside." It also has some amazing non-singles ala "Wild Life."


Both of these releases are available for really good deals on places like eBay
and Amazon.

If you really get into INXS..Be sure to also check out Michael Hutchence's self titled solo album. (It was released after his death..but simply amazing. One of my favorite albums EVER.)

Also Max Q is pure awesome as far as solo records go.
