FUNK MUSIC BAND SURVIVOR - ROUND TWO The game is pretty simple: Eleven of the biggest bands/quasi-bands of the '70s and '80s funk era are on an island, with Org members choosing who has to swim the shark-infested waters of obscurity:
* The Bar-Kays * Cameo * The Commodores * Earth, Wind & Fire * The Isley Brothers * Kool & The Gang * The Ohio Players * Parliament-Funkadelic * Rufus feat. Chaka Khan * Sly and The Family Stone * The Time The first act to receive 10 votes will lose its funk ... by serving as honorary pallbears for former N.C. senator (and infamous bigot) Jesse Helms! "Funk stands for 'For Uppity Negroes and Kwanzaa!'" [Edited 7/12/08 0:54am]

The Time. It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

LittleAmy:SERIOUS NOTE: Don't get caught up too literally in the term "funk band." I'm using it a more as an umbrella term in the context of describing the self-contained bands of the '70s and '80s. So if you want to recast your vote, you can.
umbrella baby gurl It's either Funk or Walk....ain't no half steppin'. Earth, Wind & Fire.... probably the most disciplined of them all, besides KNG when it comes to music, but not a true Funk band and I love them jus' the same. But.... if it's based on THEE ....I vote off EWF. [Edited 7/12/08 11:11am]

Thay only had one good song. I wouldn't say "one" good song. They had their share of hits, but I don't want to discredit them in any way. Hell, Love Rollercoaster always gets people on the dancefloor (so does Fire). How could you forget "Heaven Must Be Like This" and "I Want To Be Free" and the timeless "Funky Worm". **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Thay only had one good song. I guess it's all in the mileage, but I would say The Ohio Players had more than one good song: "Skin Tight" "Fire" "Who'd She Coo?" "Love Rollercoaster" "Sweet Sticky Thing" "I Want to Be Free" "O-H-I-O" "Pain" "It's All Over" "Funky Worm" "Fopp" "Estacy" "Angel" "Streakin' Cheek to Cheek" "Heaven Must Be Like This" "Honey"

Thay only had one good song. Ok, you need to get out of this thread right now. You are not qualified to vote on anything that has even remotely something to do with funk It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Can't we make Kool & The Gang go first!
Why are people putting Morris Day in the water first? I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

This will piss folks off but who cares. My vote goes to Parliament/Funkadelic. Yeah, they had some great songs but the songs have been overplayed in my area until I am absolutely sick of hearing them. Not to mention the critics praising them every chance they get. And don't even get me started on all the acts that sampled them (which is a turnoff to me). I like them and all but funk progressed and moved on. To listen to these critics in the media, you would think that funk stayed with acts like Parliament or James Brown and never moved on. My favorites have always been the ones like The Barkays or Lakeside that you never hear folks talk about any more. Andy is a four letter word.

I'm sick of Parliment/Funadelic also. The only saving grace for them is "Knee Deep" for me. To me, it is the funkiest song ever laid down. However, I wish the song "Flashlight" would just evaporate into thin air. I don't care if I ever hear it again as long as I live. I think critics praise GC and his songs because he was innovative and creative at his approach in creating music. Yeah, people like Cameo, Lakeside, the Bar-Kays, etc. all are excellent funk bands, but they didn't have the mass appeal and creative/crazy mind like GC.
