Jamie Lidell's "Jim" may possibly be the funkiest and soulful album of this year!

I may possibly get into trouble for this, but whatever.

The point is, I love Jamie Lidell's new album, "Jim". It's funky and soulful, which is more than I can say for half these Soul artists, British, American, or otherwise. It's definitely got a classic retro soul vibe going on, but it is definitely forward thinking and pushing things forward.

Jamie's great. He's got the funkiness of Prince, the gritty soul of Otis Redding, the techno-whiz smarts of Aphex Twin, and the aesthetic quirkiness of David Byrne. And he is an absolute must-see in concert. The man sets his songs up right there on the spot like a sous chef. And he does it all by himself. Vocals, beatboxing, multi-track layering. This white boy from the UK is the bomb! Take that, Jay Kay! wink

I mean, seriously, you wouldn't even bother giving him a chance? neutral Can't you just put that fucking Madonna CD down for a minute? Shit ain't even that good either. Nothing beats "Like a Prayer". But it's about the new Soul from the UK, and his name's Jamie Lidell. cool

Alright, I'll check him out on YouTube.
I already know I won't like him, but I'll give him a shot lol
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Its rehash. Multiply was SOOO much better than this record. I'm not saying its poorly done but songs like "Wait For Me" sound like old Hall and Oats (You Make My Dreams Come True) and most of the record sounds like 60s/70s rehash of soul artists. I'm disappointed.
If I wanna hear real soul, I'll put on Al Greene's new record "Lay It Down". I'm not interested in an interpretation of the music my mom raised me on. Jamie is talented and is capable of far more originality than this. What the hell is it with everyone and the rehashed 70s music this year? Alicia Keys, John Legend, Duffy, and now Jamie? et tu Jamie?

much as I love the new Al Green album (one of my favorites of the year, so far), don't you think it's basically the same thing? rehashed 70's soul? that's actually what makes most of this stuff better than contemporary-sounding r&b/soul, I think. to me, anyway. shrug
I don't want this to end

Al Greene is doing what he did back in the 70s. If you're an originator, nbody can say anything to you for doing what you do. For Jamie Lidell, its a 180 degree turn around. I hoped he would move forward, not backwards. He was born too late to be a 70s soul man. He did something different with Multiply. This...not so much. Its consistent, though - which is more than I can say for some of the other rehashers who are biting a style from an era they had no part of and copying an old style for profit.

Good songs are good songs, and Jamie has them. Yeah, he might've been inspired by classic soul music, but he spun it into his own electro-funk kinda way.

I saw him in concert this week too, and he was incredible too!! smile

Jamie is AWESOME. Multiply was a fantastic album, and the remix album, Multiply Additions is equally great. I was thrilled when Jim came out a few weeks ago and I was not disappointed. There are remixes for "Another Day" and "A Little Bit of Feel Good" available as well...all very creative and fun.

ANOTHER TIP: Go to jamielidell.com and sign up for his e-mail newsletter. They'll e-mail you a free mp3 remix of "Figured Me Out" from Jim.

music

If anyone can recommend similar artists/albums I'm all ears. Jamie has been my go-to-guy when I've O.D.'d on Prince over the past three years.

Jamie was one of those artist I discovered on myspace, when I come back around was the song that grabbed me right away. I know what blaqueknight means about so many artist rehashing the past but I think it is refreshing to hear it when it is done well, it kind of gives you that feeling that the old stuff did at one point. You can always tell when it comes from the heart and when an artist is just trying to be trendy and retro.

I am going to check out Jim now, I'm glad ppl are giving it a positive reviews, all the more reason to go get it.

"Multiply" had some of the hardest funk tracks on it.
"Jim" is anything but funky. These two albums have nothing in common at all besides his voice.Nothing.
