Barry Manilow attempts new wave pop!

Apparantly if you want it on CD, its only off his out of Print greatest hits 2 album from 1984. Thats where I got it LOL. I picked up the album quite recently and was surprised that the 3 then new tracks (Meat Loaf cover "read 'em and weep" "put a quarter in the jukebox" and this track), were all pretty decent. Infact, "read 'em and weep" is as good as Meat's version. Just that the production is kinda off (Steinman shoulda got someone else to produce it).

Anyway, its euro sounding and its not surpriseing considering the producer (Jack "Laura branigan/david hasslehoff" White). Some good people on that cut aswell (Gattica, Boddicker).

It reminds me of his "i wanna do it with you" cut, but that was much more organic then this. On his next album he did another song like this called "i'm your man", and its just as cheesy and almost as much fun LOL. But these sorta tracks have their tongue firmly in their cheek I feel.

Shame he didn't work with the producer Jack White again though.

SoulAlive

He really lost his way in the 80s disbelief He released a pop single in 1985 called "I'm Your Man" that's equally embarrassing.

Its also on an import cd now called "Ultimate Manilow" not the one that came out in the USA, its got some rare songs on there like "oh Julie" and "Bermuda Trianlge" which are hard to find at times. The irony with "read em and weep" as it was the end of Manilows Top 40 streak at 25 straight hits, its funny how Jim Steinman pretty much had a few different artists LAST top 40 hits, Obviously Meat Loaf only had success chart wise with him, Air Supplys last Top 10 hit was with him, Bonnie Tylers Final top 20 hit with "total eclipse"..His kind of like the Kiss of death at times.

As for Manilow HES THE MAN, always gets shitted on and yet whenever someone posts a Top 4o chart from the 70's or early 80's his songs are always highlighted as ones people love on this forum.

Steinmen also did a song for Streisand called "left in the dark" in 1984. Not sure if that was a single?

And soulalive, I already mentioned "Iam your man" LOL. I quite like that song too. Its so cheesy lol

Correct, it was a single, i forget where it peaked, but it shows the difference in time periods, wheree someone like Streisand could get played on Top 40 radio.

It reminds me of Martin Short.
