Reggae, Anybody?

I'm not talking about the new stuff,,,I'm talking the raw gritty grass root reggae. Does anybody listen to that here?

Lately, I've been grooving to these...

Pat Kelly's Version Of Curtis Mayfield's - Soulful Love

Alton Ellis - I'm Still In Love With You - One of my momma's fave!

Dawn Penn - No No No

Gregory Isaacs - #1

The Wailing Wailers - Stir It Up

Abso-freakin-lutely! This stuff is the shiznit!

I didn't know there was anyone else in the org that cared about the real roots reggae.

AND, I didn't know Pat Kelly's Soulful Love was a Curtis Mayfield song. My face is red.

I heard a very stripped down 45 rpm version of Soulful Love on a reggae radio show in the late 70's and have been searching for that mix ever since. I'm wondering if it was a dub plate demo. It was maybe all of two minutes long but it had this raw energy that was incedible.

I must have 7 different versions but still haven't found the one that killed me that night.

This one that you've supplied is pretty fine. I like the way the vocal and drums in the long outro have so much reverb in them.

And the Alton Ellis cut that your momma likes is the Uptown Top Ranking riddim by Althea and Donna. Do you know that one?

Yeah mon! Keep 'em comin'up hot.

How about this Prince Fari classic?

Don't know if anyone here is old enough to remember an oldie called I Dreamed I Was There in Hillbilly Heaven but this is the reggae analog of it.

And now Prince Fari has done gone on too...

He re-recorded it in that same year,,,1977(the clip I provided).

There's an earlier version of him singing it in the 60's from the Studio One label,,,I've been trying to find it in Youtube but I just couldn't.

<----- Huge Reggae fan!

nice choice with Gregory.

i'm a fan of some of the new dubstep movement. some cool tings happening with that sound. i've recently been turned on to Paul St. Hilaire, he seems to be a part of this new movement.

for anyone needing a history lesson i'd drop this on them:

this box set really breaks it down. though i doubt if it's still in print.

So that's a good example of Dub Step?

Oh well; can't say I'm impressed but personal taste is always... well, personal.

My two most unfavorite types of music are country & western and Drum 'n Bass.

I love dub effects but I can't stand that skittery hyped up beat.

I'll have to pass on Dub Step.

i would say it's a good example. Kode9, the guy who did this track seems to be one of the leaders in this genre.

yeah, if you're not feeling D n' B you might find it hard to dig into this sound being that it is heavily influenced by electronica, drum and bass and dub.

Ah, the classic Diseases riddim. Michigan and Smiley had the original ht with this one but at the time in Jamaica the studios paid the musicians a fee for their services and then owned the tracks.

Different vocalists would come in and record over the same riddims and new records would be released and sold over and over.

Only in a small place like Jamaica could the same song gain a sentimetal value within the culture.

All the musicians in JA can play these riddims on demand when a bandleader calls for it. Music in JA is truly a cultural idiom.
