Janet could have easily made a video like I'm the One You Need or The Way I Feel About You in the janet. era, as there were similar outfits, hairdos, vocal stylings etc. and a lot of the If choreography reminds me of Paula's Cold Hearted choregraphy Don't get me wrong i love the janet.era but I'm just so tired of diehards acting like no one did anything similar before. Never heard of the diehards saying that When people talk about the janet. record, it's usually about the quality of the videos and the music. Sorry, but I really don't see either Jody or Karyn turning out If, Throb, That's The Way Love Goes, etc., just as I don't see Janet turning out Still a Thrill. They each had their own specialties. Anyhoo, I think a lot of this is nitpicking. I disagree about the Cold Hearted choreography. If is a classic that to me stands on its own, and I've never looked at it and thought of Cold Hearted, which is also a classic. Janet also had curly hair for the Control era, so...ultimately those were the popular hair and clothing styles of the period, which all 3 ladies helped popularize. true, but she didn't really dress up sexy like karyn and jody, though I applaud janet for being different and liked her style anyways. I think cold hearted and if are both great but there are so many similarities in the choreography

I'm not going to lie, I don't have any of jody's albums, they are hard to find where I'm at but I'm going to keep trying. I only know the videos that are on youtube, and i think I Want You Now and I'm the One You Need are amazing, especially the latter. It's a shame it didn't go far, cause it's her most sophisticated work to date from what I'm seeing so far And karyn's the way I feel about you is one of the best songs from a female during the new jack swing era, in my opinion anyways. ugh I remember that bobby song! I can hear the similarities, but pebbles is better. For some reason, the Pebbles song made me think of r&b/funk from the late 70's/early 80's but with way more beats. I thought of the jacksons Heartbreak Hotel and stuff that Teena Marie and Diana Ross did back then for some reason. [Edited 7/18/08 12:04pm]

Both had 4 #1 hits (compared to Jody Watley's 2) and an additional 2 top-5 hits (although Jody had 6). I think you're speaking of the R&B charts. Karyn was more successful on the pop charts than Pebbles. Album-wise, Pebbles did better, though. I'd say they're about even If Karyn has an edge on the pop charts, it's very slight. Karyn had one #1 ("Romantic") and 3 other top-10 hits (#6 "Secret Rendezvous," #7 "The Way You Love Me," and #8 "Superwoman"). Pebbles only had 3 top-10 hits, but they all reached the top 5 (#2 "Mercedes Boy," #4 "Giving You the Benefit," and #5 "Girlfriend"). At any rate, it's kind of funny to see just how connected these ladies are. At least two of them have worked with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (Janet and Karyn), L.A. Reid & Babyface (Pebbles and Karyn, including a #1 duet with Face), Andre Cymone (Jody and Pebbles), Jeff Lorber (Karyn and Jody), had Johnny Gill sing guest backup vocals (Janet and Pebbles), sang a duet with a relative (Janet and Pebbles), and marry and later divorce one of their producers (Pebbles, Karyn, and Jody). I guess that's just a sign of the times (no pun intended). [Edited 7/18/08 12:22pm] "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

It's interesting but even though all four women became stars in the mid-'80s, only Janet had a consistent career.
Jody's, Karyn's and Pebbles' careers peaked at around 1993.

"Girlfriend" is my favorite Pebbles song (and my 4th-favorite Face song overall). Love it! "Giving You the Benefit" and "Love Makes Things Happen" are almost as good, though. You know what's funny though? Even though Janet's sales are low, people do feel her singles here and there and though she's not selling the way the younger female artists are right now, years from now, she might be put in the same category as them and still be around competing with the new school.

What I meant by "missing the boat" is when they came out with their final albums in 1994-95, the industry forgot what they were, lol. Even the R&B community had moved on. Pebbles' transition was personal. Karyn was just plain tired of the business. That's why you'll hear more "where are they now" stories from them.

It was a flop by the standards she set, but "I Want You" was fairly big. Karyn: Breaks onto the scene in 1988. Scores big hits up to and including 1991. Last charted singles in '94 and '95 were flops.
Only on the pop charts. "Can I Stay With You" was a top-10 R&B hit. Pebbles: Last hit single was in 1990, last charted single was in 1991.
Again, "Backyard" in 1991 was a #4 R&B hit. Remember, these ladies enjoyed more success from the R&B market (with the exception of Janet from Control forward). "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Yes, I was referring to the pop charts The biggest hit from Affairs of the Heart was I'm The One You Need (#19 Pop, #3 R&B). I think MCA saw the #124 peak of Affairs of the Heart (after two Top 20 albums preceding it) and got scared. Really, they were too hasty. They should have regrouped and started over with a new record.
