Steely Dan

These guys are worthy of your adoration. Incredible songwriters and they know a thing or two about how an album should sound sonically.
the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

listen to The Replacements - its good for the soul

I like some Steely Dan also. Stuff like "Hey Nineteen". Damn, I can't think of the others right now but they are similar to "Hey Nineteen" in their sound.

Rest assured, Linn, we know and we agree.

Seth Rogen aside, Steely Dan is my favorite rock band..

As a matter of fact, The Royal Scam is cranked in my car right now. Sometimes their songs tend to run together, but when you notice the subtleties in each one, they're jewels. Getting into "The Caves of Altamira" today.

Aja is their masterpiece. "Deacon Blues" is my all-time favorite, but "Peg" was my introduction to Steely Dan as a kid. Like Talking Book, it's virtually flawless from beginning to end.

And I'd like to put in a good word for some of their most recent work from Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go:

"What A Shame About Me"
"Jack Of Speed"
"Almost Gothic" (one of my favorite ballads this decade)
"Pixeleen"
"The Things I Miss The Most"

kudos, fellas,

from another victim of laughing chance,

peace

One of my top four bands. I love Donald Fagen's solo stuff too, especially The Nightfly,

I think all their albums are great, but Aja is the best overall.

Anyone know if a new album is on the way ? I know Walter Becker has released a solo album recently, but they seem to have got the lust to record and tour again so I would hope that Everything Must Go is not their last album.

Steely Dan has got to be my favorite group of all time... I remember as a 11 year old kid going to Sam Goody's and picking up "Aja". I played it over and over again. Fagen has got to be the greatest story tellers of all time. "Do it again", is a masterpiece. All praises to Steely Dan!!

Probably just another of their oddball relationship scenarios.
Maybe a few lines are based on actual occurrences but who knows.
They'll never tell, that's for sure. smile

East St Louis Toodle-oo...

...is a Duke Ellington tune.

The album cover is supposed to represent Aja, an Asian girl who married a friend of Donald Fagen's and came over to the States to live with him. This in turn inspired Fagen to write about 'the serenity of a quiet relationship with a beautiful woman'.

Hence the Asian girl and the stars and stripes on the Aja cover.

This was revealed by Fagen on the Aja Classic Albums DVD.

PIXELEEN

Now that's a tune!

What do you guys think of the allegedly racial[ist?] under tone of their songs? I read a post where someone had examined their songs and concluded there were some dodgy anti-black lyrics. Will try to find the link.

Always dug Steely ever since I was a kid. Smart songwriting. Killer lyrics. "Reelin In The Years" has some of the greatest lyrics ever written. They always had great musicianship on their albums. Especially the guitar work. Great production.
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Boo...all their setlists say they aren't doing "Do It Again." Favorite SD song. CBAT is the album of theirs I really love. Gotta spin Aja before the show I guess.

Either way, their live musicianship is so amazing, they could do a whole show of Liza Minnelli or Limp Bizkit or Justin Timberlake covers and it'd be worth the ticket.

It took several conversations, but I finally convinced my dad to purchase tickets for the intimate Wells Fargo Center for the Arts concert here in Santa Rosa, CA. He had to become a 'member' to get those seats, and they weren't cheap. I love SD as much (or maybe more) as he does, and I sacrificed my ticket for my stepmother. I sure hope she enjoys them even half as much as I would. lol

This is my third time 'missing' them live.
Oh shit, my hat done fell off
