Nasty Girl's of Rap You've (Probably) Never Heard Of

I thought it'd be worth a shot in the dark to bring attention to what can be considered the precursor's (early 90's) to the hyper-sexualized female rapper that Lil' Kim successfully ushered into the mainstream with 1996's, Hardcore.

Unlike Kim, these females were more along the lines of being rap novelties; I doubt you would ever hear their name being brought up in a discussion in regards to impressive lyricisim. While Luke Campbell's 2 Live Crew flaunted their obscenity for all to hear and see from a male perspective, these brazen women sent shock waves throughout the industry by assuming the roles of their male counterparts (with a feminine touch no less). Whether they spoke of sodomizing their male partner with a dildo, willing participation in prostitution, engaging in around-the-clock gangbangs, or simply "fucking for a nut;" no topic proved too risque to be touched upon.

At a time when femcees the likes of Queen Latifah, Harmony, and Yo-Yo were promoting messages of African-American female empowerment and self-worth, these ladies threw every rule of a conventional female rapper out the window and laid on their backs with their legs spread wide open! How's that for being as nasty as they wanna be?

First up, B.W.P. (Bytches With Problems):

The female duo Bitches With Problems (BWP) debuted in 1991 to a mix of outrage and indifference with The Bytches on No Face. They were subsequently signed by RAl-Chaos, a label distributed by Columbia, and issued Life's a Bitch in 1993. This duo talked about stuff that women talked about behind closed doors. Periods were not off limits as with the song "Cotex," with one half of the group shouting, "B.... go change your Cotex," referring to a female funking it up. They talked about child support, deadbeat boyfriends, and cash. "Is the P Still Good," is about just what it sounds. Like Hoes with Attitude, Bytches with Problems was often called a female 2 Live Crew because of its X-rated, rude and crude lyrics. And like the Crew, the Bytches were a guilty pleasure one would enjoy only after his girlfriend had left the room (Life's a Bitch was subsequently shelved for reasons unknown just days before it's scheduled release).

Not too far off, Choice:

Texan female rapper Choice debuted on Rap-A-Lot Records in 1989. She was featured on Willie D's album bragging about her pussy that was "the size of Bolivia". Her stint on Willie's album paved the way for her now infamous debut, "The Big Payback". Rap audiences were left speechless when Choice dared to diss all of the big male rap acts of the time (NWA, Geto Boys, Too Short) on her debut single "Payback". Whether she was calling them ugly or questioning their sexuality, Choice let these men know she was not to be messed with! As for the rest of the album, Choice took the time to tackle serious issues plaguing the female African American youth at the time: small dick boyfriends, premature ejaculation, masturbation, and cunninlingus.

In 1992 Choice released her sophomore effort, "Stick-N-Moove". This album would set the standards for raunchy female rappers for the years to come. Choice took things to the other level with such sexually charged tracks like "Tales From The Sexside" and "One Just Ain't Enough". Choice, the finest woman living in Texas, once again didn't censor herself. Her songs about gang bangs, anal sex, and raping her man with a dildo, left listeners in awe. No other woman in rap had ever taken things to such an extreme. Of course, in her quest to be multi-dimensional, Choice took the time to explore topics that didn't have to do with just her sexual escapades. "HIV Positive" was the album's first single and served as a sort of public awareness for HIV dilemma occurring in the country. "Storybook Ho's" saw Choice breaking down the gritty truth of life in the ghetto using famous cartoon/fairytale characters.

Last, but certainly not least (aside from their barely there wardrobe), H.W.A. (Hoez With Attitude):

If BWP (Bitches With Problems) weren't hip-hop's most controversial female group of the early '90s, then HWA (Hoes With Attitudes) certainly qualified. Openly flaunting a loose (to put it mildly) sexual attitude and standing vulgarity to vulgarity with any male rapper, HWA failed to generate much sales action, but certainly got plenty of publicity, including a lengthy article in The Source and condemnation from sources as diverse as Rev. Calvin Butts and filmmaker Spike Lee.

Released in 1990, Livin' in a Hoe House is hardly the first example of women talking dirty. Vanity and other Prince disciples did it in the '80s, and Lucille Bogan's '30s blues classic "Shave 'Em Dry" is as X-rated as anything that H.W.A., B.W.P., or Lil' Kim ever recorded. But while this album isn't revolutionary, it's entertaining -- that is, if you have a taste for crude humor. No topic was taboo, whether it be the struggles with a not so well endowed boyfriend ("Little Dick"), phone sex hotlines ("1-900-Bitches"), good pussy ("Tight"), cunninglus ("Eat This"), or the days in the life of a nymphomaniac ("Freaky Daze").

In 1994, HWA returned with an EP titled, "Az Much Ass Azz U Want". Now under the supervision of rap legend Eazy-E on his Ruthless Records label, the hoez's second release boasted better production, lyrics and a nicer album cover! This EP has most definitely aged well like many of the other "West Coast" rap releases from the era. Lyrically, no new territory was explored, but the EP's purpose was to prepare the public for the upcoming full length album "Hoez In Training". Unfortunately with Eazy-E's untimely death the following year that album never happened and HWA split.

Cinnie	I remember HWA from back in the day and I have BWP's cd, but I had never heard of Choice until boriquateddy broke it down a few years back.
