Sony Legacy Issues 30th Anniversary of "The Stranger" this is how U do re-issues!!

On July 8th Sony Legacy will issue Billy Joel's "Stranger" his 1977 monster selling album, which ironically didnt slow his output, he had 1978's 52nd Street and 1980's Glass Houses. Sony gives this a re-issue the usual re-mastering in sound and those of you know that Billy's early cd's still need it, his original cd issues were too low and even his original re-masters werent that much of an improvement. But for this edition Sony has dug up a 1997 Carnegie Hall performance and mastered that for a bonus cd, which has never been released in ANY FORM. And to further that, there is a 3 disc edition which will have the cd, the carnegie cd, and also a Dvd of Billy in 1977 doing a concert on the Old Grey Whistle test. So people may say, what about demos or bsides?? well Billy already had a 4cd box set of that which including alot from the "the stranger" days. So thinks can be done RIGHT when more thought is put into them, or you check what FANS wanted from this. So you get a 3 disc set of nothing but that time period, that genius album of work and things never seen at THAT TIME. What you dont get (thank god) are things like "only the good die young" duet with Fall Out Boy or Akons remix of the "Stranger".

Yeah this is some great stuff, Billy has mostly emptied the vaults of demos on the 4cd box he had "my life" though i know there has to be others, but these two live sets one cd and one dvd are top notch stuff. Just the competition and creativity going on in the 70's when everyone was cutting 1-2 albums a year.

It's a damn shame that Prince's impressive catalog might not EVER get upgraded at all, because of his stubbornness.

I totally agree and with the over abundance of tracks, demos, etc...its really a shame and makes you wonder about what if's...

But this Billy Joel Legacy collection is KICK ASS! they are already planning one for his 52nd Street cd next year and Glass Houses the following.

LD,

I am a sucker for legacy and deluxe editions.

I think the best ones have been the Elvis Costello 2 cd's with b sides and live stuff.

The new Elton Tumblweed is good.

My all time fav is the Diana Deluxe with the original Chic Mix.

This Billy Joel release looks good, but I am so saturated with his music from popular radio I just can't bring myself to buy it. Like the U2 reissues..

I just reached my boiling point with them.
Music is the best...

The two Elton's are amazing, to me his output from 1970-1976 still is the greatest of really anyone out there, not only in terms of success, the shit was just top notch. For me the joel issue is great to finally get some live stuff from this era, really before he blew up, this was more the low key billy still, not the guy who could sell out madison square garden in 10 seconds.

Could you imagine a 2-CD 'Purple Rain' Deluxe Edition?? That would be amazing!
