In The Air Tonight Myth: How true is it?

I know this will seem a little superstitious of me, but there have been so many stories behind what/who served as The Muse of sorts for "In The Air Tonight". But some things seem to connect while others don't. I don't know, really. It's too random to "SUPPOSEDLY" be fueled by the divorce between Phil Collins and his wife. Forgive me if my words have gone astray in definite meaning as to keeping integral my scrupulousness towards semantics. But I'm curious.

The thing about the guy in the audience? Not true at all.

i thought he caught his wife sleeping with another guy, like walked in on them. and that's what inspired the song.

I think this song has inspired lots of rumors. I remember hearing that Phil Collins watched this kid drown in a lake or something, and wrote a song abaout it. Wanna hear it, hear it goes.

I heard Phil Collins remark once that the lyrics were completely random and ad-libbed. He said the music for the song was finished, but they had no lyrics. He said he just stepped up to the mic and started rambling. Who knows what he had in his head?
