Waxpoetics No.29 ...Herbie Hancock (front cover) / Spoonie Gee (back cover) Another great edition from the folks at Waxpoetics. The article on Herbie Hancock and the Mwandishi period... ...along with the albums & musicians (especially Buster Williams) that lead up to it, I knew was coming. Ever the tech-head, at some points, Herbie and the band were doing concerts in quadraphonic sound. As usual, the magazine had a couple of surprises in store. One was a fabulous article on Jazz octogenarian... ...Sam Rivers. I was fortunate enough to do a few gigs with Sam Rivers and attended a performance on his 80th birthday here at the Jazz Bakery in L.A. Although considered by many to be a leader of the Free Jazz movement, most are unaware how versatile a musician he is playing with everyone from Miles, Dizzy, Chaka Khan, Wilson Pickett and Jimi Hendrix. "Anyway, the story with me and Jimi is that we met at a jam session. It was a session down on Broadway and Sixteenth Street. There was a lost up there, so I used to go there and play. So one time, I don't know how they got him there, but Jimi Hendrix was up there. We Were jamming together, and he really liked my flute--man, his eyes brightened up when he heard it. So we used to go down to his place in Woodstock. We'd play down there in his studio. We used to play all the time down there and did a lot of stuff there, but I don't know what happened to it. He and his wife (?) had a nice house down there. We went down for dinner, Bea and myself. We were down there and were pretty much guests all the time when he was in town. He never asked me to play with him. I would have though." Along with his solo albums, a few other albums you can hear him on... Life Time - first solo album from Tony Williams Into Somethin' - organist Larry Young Dialogue - vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson Miles in Tokyo - Miles Davis, Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter & Sam Rivers ...Well worth a listen. The other was an article on composer... ...Lalo Schifrin At one point the interviewer asks him a question that leads into the subject of Brazilian music... "See, what happened was the bossa nova-which is another African rhythm [and] is also a combination of Brazilian and jazz-became very big with the audiences. Astrud Gilberto, Luiz Bonfa, Joao Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim-all these guys were composing and playing amazing music. Also Sergio Mendes, and there was a guitar player named Baden Powell. So what happened was that the Brazilian government decided to sponsor a bossa nova festival at the Carnegie Hall, and the only two non-Brazilians invited to perform there were Stan Getz and myself. So that's how I met all these guys. As a matter of fact, I'm at a party for all of them, and I remember Baden Powell playing in my house in New York in the living room until five in the morning." ...Good stuff!
