Watching the Best of Soul Train this weekend made me think of Beyonce!

OK, I was at home jamming to the Best of Soul Train with Jermaine Stewart, The Bus Boys and Pebbles. I then I started thinking..."Pebbles really reminds me of Beyonce for some reason". I don't know if it was her body or the way she moved on stage, but it really made me think of B (especially in the early DC days).

What do you guys say? The only major difference I see is that Beyonce dances more than Pebbles, but the stage presence is about the same.

When Beyonce starts a record label and rips off her artists, the transformation into Pebbles will be complete. biggrin

LOL!!!! I was thinking that also.

Looks like she's leaving that task up to her father.

When I was watching this episode,I was thinking that Pebbles was such a bland performer. She was sexy as hell but didn't really have any stage presence or pizazz.I'm not a huge Beyonce fan,but at least she puts alot of energy into her performances.

Pebbles never had a voice or stage presence IMO. She was just a pretty face married to the owner of the recording company. She looks more like Sheila with that hair and I didn't know she was also from O-town.

On another note, it's funny to watch her performing with this dude who was also in Janet's "What Have You Done For Me, Lately?" video cuz he went on to become a transvestite/transexual a few years later. Ironic. lol

For the most part,I didn't really like this episode. The late-80s wasn't a great time for R&B music. Many of the songs they played weren't that good.

That is so funny that someone else noticed this...my wife saw Pebbles and said "Why is Beyonce singing that old song?" Don Cornelius seemed a little bit off when he was interviewing her...but then again that's how Don seemed with most of his interviews. Cool as hell but kind of on his own planet.

When I was watching this, I started questioning what happened to him. He did several videos with Janet (on both RN and Control) and he also did some of her early award show performances. I always thought he was gay, but I didn't know he went on to be a TV?!?!

You know, looking back, I see that Don was almost a perv at times. He said and did a lot of things back then that would have gotten him cancelled in this day and time.

sad

I loved the music of the late 80s. It takes me back to a happy place in my life. No worries about mortgage, no worries about bills, no worries at all.

Beyonce would have to add this to her resume: Pebbles was married three times in roughly an eight-year span.

According to an interview she did with People magazine years ago, she got married at 16 to her daughter Ashley's father and divorced him a year later.

Then Pebbles married real estate contractor George Smith in 1984 (Smith bankrolled her demo tape to the tune of $80,000 and there were unspecified rumors that she was the other woman in Smith's first marriage). Then she dropped Smith and married L.A. Reid in 1989.

Here is the People article:

http://www.people.com/peo...90,00.html

If I recall, Pebbles gave a shout-out to her then-husband George Smith on the liner notes for the self-titled 1988 album. That should give you an indication of how sudden it was when she married L.A. Reid one year later.

Pebbles, Jody Watley and Karyn White have two things in common:

1.) latter '80s to early '90 soul/pop/dance artists
2.) fucking for tracks

True. biggrin biggrin But at least Jody Watley and Karyn White had established themselves to some degree before they outright fucked for tracks. Pebbles' whole career was based on fucking for tracks and she was not above dumping a husband (and apparently wrecking marriages) to do it.

EDIT: Looking at my math, Pebbles' three marriages likely were in a shorter time period (five to seven years) than over an eight-year span. Her daughter Ashley apparently was born in late 1982 to 1983, according to the People article.

That's probably why the episode reminded him of Beyonce. Much weaker music than the previous years. lol
