Funky latin music - any recommendations?

Hi there,

I just wondered what you would recommend if I want to give as a gift some CDs of funky Latin music? There must be good Latino grooves that are outside the Salsa, Merenge, Reagaton style...

Any insights appreciated!!!! Muchisimas gracias!!

Never had Pananma on the map - will definitely check it out. I lived in Venezuela for some time, they have some funky house-influenced types such as Amigos Invisibles (well-worth checking out, good vibes), and some really groovy percussion bands...

I LOVE this group called Novalima. They have a cd called "Afro". Its a mix of Peruvian and African styles/rythms, and the cd has a pretty interesting account of how the music is a hybrid of what slaves brought over, and indigenous sounds. Great stuff! Enjoy cool

Funky Latin music to me is a group like WAR. Technically not a "latino" band but is much beloved by hispanics. The got some funky stuff like "Cisco Kid", "Lowrider" and others. cool

Rumbero

Sintesis

Los Van Van

Irakere

Antibalas

Besides Antibalas, most of the funky stuff from the above groups is hard to find though. Wax Poetics did a good job covering Cuban Funk from in issue 27 I think.

But CaCHao is as funky as they come!
