This sums up the decline of inspiration that artists have now....

Just watching the Nelson Mandela 90th birthday concert and to sum up what someone pointed out about artists today having just the total LACK of inspiration, well it goes to the audience too. Its puzzling how artists can sell millions now and still NOT get a crowd hyped for a show.

EXAMPLE:

Opening this concert is Leona Lewis, a semi-decent vocalist, that is currently the number one international artist, so you would think the crowd of 100,000 would be PUMPED, she came out and i never saw a crowd so STILL in my life, it was like the stereotypical industry parties where NO ONE moves at all, well this was worse, except it was people that buy music. And some people were singing along but they were like lifeless zombies, and thats what the music is too. So that sums up this era of performer and artists

Leona's a total bore. People get excited for the indie rockers and hip-hoppers nowadays.

At these events i never see new acts really getting any kind of a reaction. Just about 10 minutes later on this show Simple Minds came out and played "dont you forget about me" and not one person was standing still. Sure its a classic, but even when they played that song at LIVE AID in 85 when it was the "current thing" they got that reaction, see what im getting at, NO ONE is going to hold up from todays crop.

The "artists" are NOT selling millions.
Listeners are NOT buying this crap.

The careers, popularity, and lives of these "artists" are GHOSTS created by the music industry machine.

This industry is not in the business of music. They're in the business of ads for just about everything else. They could care less about someone getting a crowd hyped. They create walking props/avatars and they try to convince the public that these people are hot.

I think you're being somewhat harsh on Ms. Lewis. This woman has real vocal talent and ability, but she's not suited to stadium-type shows. Even her mentors Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey aren't suited to stadium-type shows because while they have the pipes to sing in front of a massive crowd, they don't have enough stage presence to do that. Christina Aguilera could possibly pull off a stadium show because she has a huge stage presence to go along with her voice.

The other problem with Leona Lewis is that her album is so full of soft ballads that one could fall asleep listening to it in one sitting. zzz This isn't meant to discount her vocals; they are quite awesome, but she should be able to sing at least a couple of uptempo dance tracks every once in a while.

Its a bit more than her presence, her vocals are alright, but she has bad habits like so many others, oversinging and scatting, but the music is bad, even if it was a dance track it would be bad, theres no inspiration there, she almost looks like she doesnt care for what she is singing. Im using her as an example because there are plenty of others from todays crop.

I agree with Huey, it's hard for this kind of act to move a stadium sized crowd.

But it's also pretty axiomatic that you need to warm a crowd that big up with some high energy stuff to ignite them into the mood to appreciate a ballad or two.

You don't start with the ballad; you wack 'em hard with the first song then build some more energy with the next few songs to a crescendo and then it's time to slow it down and bring out someone like Leona.

Don't know who planned that lineup but they sure stacked it wrong.

It wasnt even that, people were singing along, they were just lifeless, theres a HUGE difference between "getting warmed up" and having one of the top artists of the day out there and no one cares, i mean they could have put a piece of cardboard on stage and played the record and gotten the same response.

I don't think you understood my point december but hey, it's your thread and you were there.

Let me try again:

I don't care if it was Madonna or Al Green out there rather than Leona.

You don't step onto a stage in front of thousands that have been just milling around and waiting for the show to start and begin your set with ballad.

Even a big star would get a low level response.

I disagree with you. I think she got enough respect from the crowd, if you're talking about her performance of "Better In Time" - she seemed to get enough cheers. But my question for you is - why does a crowd always have to be PUMPED?!?! Can't I take in a song at a concert softly and solemnly? I think I have only heard of her from So You Think You Can Dance, so I'm not a fan, but still, I think your comment is an example of too much expectations being placed on artists - this was for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday, so I'd expect THAT to be the focus.

Funny you bring this up LD, I went to Iron Maiden at MSG/NYC a few wks ago.

And let me tell you this I have been to hundreds of shows, and I have never seen or heard a crowd as loud as the fans there.

I in turn had blast, enjoyed it even more, and was clearly moved by it.

I always argue that some of today's best artists albeit mostly in the pop field don't move me at all.... ie my comments on Grammy's with Beyonce who bores me to death and then Tina Turner who gave me chills.

It's the intangible quality that can not be formulated or manipulated by magazine covers, ET story lines, or crazy record counting bs.....
Music is the best...

How the hell could an audience get hyped up when the artists never get faster than midtempo? What else are they supposed to do other than bob their damn head?

Well for one thing, they need to stop hyping her up as this anti-Amy Winehouse and let this young lady forge an identity of her own. Everything I read on this girl is all about "she's not Amy Winehouse!" No shit, Sherlock... she's not! So let her have her own thing and stop making comparisons because she's British.

As for the audience, that's everywhere and it's not regulated to this young lady. I've been at many shows with top-notch artists and it's as if the crowd is just sitting there twiddling their thumbs. That can happen to anyone.

No there is a difference between being psyched up and pumped up, im not talking about them going ape shit and passing out, im talking general looks of boredom, it reminded me of when Prince played the "emancipation concert" and the front crowd was all industry and no one looked like they gave a crap. Thats what it looked like, but theres a difference that your missing and that is the point, the absence of music mattering to people anymore. Sure she is new, but take an event like a live aid in 1985, and take the new artists of the day then, and look at the responses and the vibe they got from their crowd. and i know all too well about expectations on an artist, im probably the only one that points that out while people bash alicia keys 24/7, so its not that either, i dont have an expectation of ms. lewis, but there is nothing there, which is strange because this is someone who is selling millions and theres this gap between artist and audience. But again she is an example, but this goes on everywhere now, artists now are nothing more than a ringtone to people.
