This is a tough one because I really love both groups.I'll have to think about it and give you my answer another time.But,here are my favorite songs by both groups...
Mary Jane Girls--- ***"Candy Man"(1983)---this signaled a new sound from Rick James.His earlier productions relied heavily on horns but for this song,he used more synths than ever before (similiar to his own album that year 'Cold Blooded'). ***"Boys"(1983)---You gotta love that little spoken interlude near the end,where the girls apparently walk into a club to check out all the guys..."Check out the one with the jeri curl...Uh uh,now wait a minute,you mean the "scary curl",look at that stuff drippin' all over his shirt!" 
***"Jealousy"(1983)---Man,I LOVE this song!! This is almost total New Wave,and it should have been a huge pop hit. ***"All Night Long"(1983)---Although they play it a little too much on Old School R&B stations,it's still a kickass song.The bassline has been sampled on numerous rap hits. ***"Shadow Lover"(1985)---Why wasn't this gorgeous ballad released as a single? ***"In My House"(1985)---This is STILL da jam!!! Very sexy video too. ***"Girlfriend"(1985)---Another underrated single. Klymaxx--- ***"The Men All Pause"(1984)---A Jam and Lewis production that kicks ass!! This groove is fierce and the lyrics would make Morris Day proud...lol... ***"Meeting In The Lady's Room"(1984)---This is their finest moment!!! A classic Old School jam from the mid-80s,this song would STILL get everybody on the floor. ***"Lock And Key"(1984)---another funky jam ***"I Miss You"(1984)---This song proved that they could do ballads too. ***"Sexy"(1986)---Another song that would make Morris Day proud (it's obvious that drummer Bernadette Cooper was trying to be "the female Morris Day"). ***"I'd Still Say Yes"(1986)---Along with "Meeting In The Ladies Room",this is my second favorite Klymaxx song.It's a great ballad with additional vocals by Howard Hewitt. ***"Man-Size Love"(1986)---Another winning Klymaxx song. Well,I thought about it and I guess I would have to say The Mary Jane Girls win this prize!! They got some killer jams on both of their albums,as I listed above.Lead singer JoJo is a powerful vocalist too.
Btw,there is a third,unreleased Mary Jane Girls album that is sitting in the Motown vaults,collecting dust.Rick James was fighting with Motown for control of the group,and as a result,their third album never came out.It was produced by James in 1986 and was titled 'Conversation'. | |
