Joni Mitchell "Dreamland"

I knew this song from a set of demos for the Hissing album, but turns out the finished version of "Dreamland" is on this Don Juan's.. album!

I bought a lot of stuff recently and realized i hadn't spun it yet, I am just now checking it out but I went to "dreamland" first.

I want to tell more people about the demo or acoustic versions I heard!

Google this, it is referred to on the Internet as The Seeding Of Summer Lawns. Sounds like it was sourced from tape.

You know what else is on this album that I really appreciate?

I knew the song "Jericho" from her 1974 live album Miles Of Aisles and realllly enjoyed that one. Pretty awesome that she recorded it for Don Juan's Reckless Daughter.

Don Juan's has been my riding-to-work-on-the-bus music for the past week or so. I've been loving it. I just read Mark Bego's biography which is a totally biased love letter to her but has me pulling out alot of her albums that I've only really glossed over. For some reason I think I need to get them on vinyl. I have the Shadows and Light CD but want to pick up the DVD.

I haven't read any books about her but I am getting to that level of famdom where I might just want to. Her life experience seems really interesting.

I adore "Jericho," but listening to it is bittersweet. I dedicated it to a person I once had a thing for. Things didn't work out, and the song ever reminds me. sad

I also have a joni song that is special 2 me. Everything i listen 2 it, that person's essence pops in my soul.

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue tv screen light
I drew a map of canada
Oh canada
And your face sketched on it twice

For those who don't know, Chaka Khan does guest vocals on "Dreamland" If you listen you'll hear a couple of her signature wails in the song.

yes Chaka Khan was the REASON WHY
I gave Don Juan's... a spin
to hear what she contributed
to "Dreamland" love
Chaka is also present on
"The Tenth Hour"

if I'm not mistaken (Aisha please correct me)
but won't there some tension in the studio
during this recording?
something about Joni tryin to tell
Chaka HOW to sing the parts?

those divas... tell them WHAT to sing
but PLEEEEEASE don't tell them HOW to sing lol
same thing happeneds with Aretha & Luther
during the Get It Right/Jump To It sessions

@Cin - I really love "Jericho" also love
Jaco Pastorious (the guy who did
the original sample for SWV's "Rain"...
"A Portrait Of Tracy" is the name
of his song I think)

is present throughtout Don Juan's... also..

I think it's the wacky keyboard effects
or vibes or whatever you call that groovy sound
that chimes in from time to time
on "Off Night Back Street"
(which is my favorite song on there)

this album also contains my fav Joni quote
(of the moment)

"there was a lamp and a street light
didn't know I drank such alot
til I pissed a tequila anaconda
the full length of the parking lot"

(from "Talk To Me")

lol that always tickled me

I'm about to put this album on
it's great work music cool

because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

Uh, that wacky keyboard effect would be Jaco's bass. He was the master of harmonics(the chime or bell-like sound produced when plucking the string with fingers above the frets of the guitar)
