Happy 85th Birthday, Barry Manilow! One of my favorites, and today's his birthday. I wish more stars would take the higher road and age naturally...just like Barry's done. Thanks to good genes and good hygiene, he doesn't look a day over 65.
Some of his best: Live performance of Chopin's Prelude in C Minor/Could It Be Magic Copacabana, live performance (looks like he's wearing a Michael Myers mask here). The oldest, whitest crowd I've ever seen. A 1979 performance clip of some homely broads losing their fucking overies over Barry just before he sings Weekend in New England Mandy - do not ask me why but I always thought this was about a dog.

Barry is a greatly under-rated musician, and he also has done some really good Jazz work. His 1984 "2am Paradise Cafe" featured guests Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Gerry Mulligan, Mundell Lowe and others. His 1987 "swing Street" featured Kid Creole and Phyllis Hyman to name a few. And say what you want about his ballads, but the early ones, were works of perfection and production and its best, (the 70's still the best production decade). Also his 1979 Album "One Voice" is IMO one of the best records made, a mix of balllad, funk and disco. I haven't heard 2:00 AM Paradise Cafe, but I've heard it's good. I do like his 2001 release... Here at the Mayflower

I was really happy the way "Concord" pushed him, it was right after this that "Manilow" blew up again as the kids would say. "The Ultimate Collection" sold like mad after this and then of course came his 50's-70's tribute albums. Im hoping he does record another "original" cd soon. I remember it debuting well within the top 10, his first in a long while if I recall correctly. Nonetheless, Mayflower harkened back to the best of his 70s work. Glad I picked it up.

I dont remember for sure, i do know it sold a few million, which is like selling 10 million these days. But he did debut at Number 1 with the 50's tribute and 60's also, which both came in the same calendar year, one of a few to do that with two records. Yeah i agree im not a fan of that stuff, i dont mind when he does big band stuff, because thats more of "HIM", though no one really gives him props, he is the Sinatra of his time for the most part, especially his 70's work and the production. Yeah, he's stretched a li'l tight. But he's one of the better producers from the 70s I think, so yes...happy 65th birthday, Mr. Manilow. He's a lot more versatile than people give him credit for. The track below, Daytime Hustler is one of his best production efforts and if you listen around the 1:55 mark, you'll hear a classic funky drum loop.

And also he is smart, an interviewer asked him recently about what from "today" that he listens too, and he said, "not too much" because no one really writes the classic POP song anymore like they did back then, but he did say he listened to alot of the "dance" artists like Underworld,Van Dyk,and Massive Attack.
