I think you and I are probably the only ones who know who she is. I loved her throughout her beginning (yes in the Leslie Phillips era) through Omni pop. I didn't get too much into her music after that. There was that critiacally acclaimed Martinis and Bikinis that I didn't like that much. I did get Boot and a shoe...yawn

How's this one compare to her catalog. My favorite is Cruel Inventions.

The new CD is much better than her last CD - A Boot and a Shoe (which I didn't care for). It still has a lo-fi sound but is more alt sounding with distorted guitar noise in the background and sharper songwriting this time out. She produced this effort herself. She has divorced T-Bone Burnett and musically it seems to have paid off.

In Hollywood on June 3rd, Aimee Mann played a quick 'release party' set at the Amoeba records store at 6pm and Sam Phillips played a quick 'release party' set across the street at Border's at 7pm. I was able to see them both play on the date of their record releases and they were both amazing!

It's taking me some time to get into the two albums, though.

A side note: In the late 90's, I worked with Sam in the studio recording her background vocals for a Jimmie Dale Gilmore record produced by her (then) husband T-Bone Burnette. What a warm, wonderful lady. I remember at one point waiting for a set up or something, she offered me some of her Skittles. I love Skittles!

I was a big fan of Cruel Intentions and Martinis and Bikinis, but I completely lost track of her years ago - I wasn't even sure if she was still recording.

...and the plot thickens.

Looking over the liner notes of both CDs, it turns out Aimee and Sam used the same musicians:

Paul Bryan: Bass
Jay Bellerose: Drums
Eric Gorfain: Violin

and recorded at Sunset Sound and The Sound Factory; both owned by the same guy, Paul Camarata. Check it out for yourselves!

Don't mind me though; I'm clearly just having a conversation with myself.
