OUT OF THE BLUE is the shit. it's by far my favorite ELO album.
after that, i would recommend DISCOVERY - it has a lot of the same shine as OOTB, only it's a little less sprawling. and you already have the XANADU soundtrack. i haven't heard all their earlier stuff, but aside from the singles, what i have heard was pretty hit or miss.

That's the best! Then I'd suggest going one on one backwards. You'll love them. Face The Music...Eldorado... Oh, get the remasters.

Out of sheer curiosity, you might want to check out the first album...
...No Answer which is closest to their original Classical/Rock/Pop concept. Jeff Lynne took over from that album forward and their sound has been locked in stone ever since. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. ELO is has always been of my my favorite bands. I adored this band when I was very little. I have all of their albums on wax from the 70's and early 80's. I know everyone will say their most popular albums; "Out Of The Blue" and "A New World Order" which are indeed great. Those two albums combined basically make up an ELO Greatest Hits. But I also dig their earlier stuff and the albums after the two glorified albums. I dig "Electric Light Orchestra" (their debut) and ELO II. "Ole'" and "Discovery" are great. I LOVE "Secret Messages". "Face The Music" and "Discovery", & "On The Third Day" are also great. Basically, if u love the 70's, which I know u do, then you can't go wrong with anything by ELO from that whole decade. Of course, like most bands from this period, their best stuff, their most "magical" material is from the mid 70's to 79. But I find if you dig the hits, then if I were you, I would go to their earlier albums, definately. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I had planned on picking up Out of the Blue but they didn't have it. Instead, I got...
No Answer ...and... A New World Record Looking forward to giving them a listen. I also picked up the reissue of Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue, but that has nothing to do with this thread.

So, I've listened to both a few times now.
I'm glad I picked this one up. I knew it was a different sound from what is typically thought of as the ELO sound, but I guess I was after that ELO sound. I'm glad I listened to it, because I do like hearing the evolution of a group's music. That said, I don't know that I'll go back to it often. It's very experimental and, to me, sounds like a work-in-progress. I like 10538 Overture a lot, but not much else sticks out. Maybe it'll grow on me more with time. This one? Loved every minute of it! I already knew and loved all the singles from it, but I looooove Mission. What a beautiful song that one is! The extras on the re-master are good, too. Surrender is excellent. I'm happy to have the CDs but I'm going to have to pick some of these up on vinyl just to appreciate larger versions of the artwork.
